James chuckled to himself as Remus rolled his eyes. It wasn't so much that James was opposed to touching moments with teary-eyed hugs and all that, but a man had his dignity to think of. There was plenty enough in the world to get broken up about, if they did it every time there was cause, it'd just get old.
When Remus kept on, though, a good portion of James's merriment stalled. Blokes were one thing, but Sirius was... well, Sirius. Relationships were really what he went for-- and all that stuff Remus wanted... Well it wasn't what that Sirius couldn't provide those things. James reckoned it was more a matter of wanting to. And after all that bullshit with Sirius's parents--
Because parents were the ones who were supposed to love you better than anybody else could. Your family was supposed to be your foundation. And just look at what Sirius's did to him. It was the worst sort of fucked up there was, and if there was one woman James had it in him to hate, it would have been Sirius's mother. James wouldn't have blamed Sirius if he never wanted to let anyone get close to him ever again. And not for nothing, but if Sirius ever got so inclined, and whoever it was fucked it up, James would personally exact very unimaginative retribution.
Because James was sensitive. And cared about feelings and stuff. And because that was what real family did.
"Well, for one, knock it off with all that trying to stop the whole feeling thing. Seriously, it puts fumors in your head, there's all sorts of muggle books on it. It's just not healthy." And for a whole host of other reasons to, but James didn't much feel the need to get philosophical at the moment. "But getting hung up on Sirius? I mean, I love him-- you know that, he's my blood," figuratively speaking, "but uh... he's not exactly the sort you bring home to meet your mother, you know what I mean?"
Part of what James loved about Sirius was the general expectation that picket fences weren't really in his life plan. But James wasn't entirely sure that Sirius even knew the definition of monogamy. Well. Then again, maybe there had to be commitment before monogamy every became an issue, so that'd have made it a bit moot. And he didn't doubt that Remus knew that, he just needed to hear Remus say it, so that he could know for sure that Remus knew better to get his hopes up. And of course James knew Remus knew better, but all the same, just needed to hear it. It was for Remus's own good, really
