"I wouldn't say that Regulus and I are friends, but we have been getting along," Remus supplied with an easy shrug. James was right, of course. Deep down, it wasn't about Regulus at all, and James didn't need anyone to figure himself out. Still, Remus felt that if he could have Regulus's understanding of his own situation, it might make James feel a bit better while giving Regulus his due importance in the world. Regulus, who had believed (and who possibly still believed) that Sirius had held a party when he'd learned that Regulus had died. If James Potter were to apologise for being a git, it would only help the situation between the brothers.
But really, this wasn't about Regulus and his relationship with Sirius. This was James and James had to figure out James. And that was that. James had to come first. And he did.
Although, he was glad to learn that James and Regulus had at least spoken. It wasn't peculiar that Regulus hadn't made any mention of it, but he supposed he was still somewhat disappointed at the lost opportunity to bring him closer to Sirius. Really, Sirius could only benefit from a good relationship with his brother.
But this wasn't about Sirius either.
Until, of course, James decided to bring him up again, and in that context.
If Remus had been feeling any less strongly on the subject, he might have thrown James a rather unimpressed fake glare, a narrowing of the eyes despite the need to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing. Instead, that reaction never occurred to him and a blush very quickly spread up his neck and into his face. Even his scalp tingled at the wave of warm blood that rushed through his head. He had to clear his throat before speaking.
"I would much rather he be sober when- if- such a thing were to happen. I appreciate your offer, though. Much as I'm sure I would enjoy it, it would only clarify just how persuasive you are, nothing to do with me." It was only once he'd finished talking that he realised it sounded very much as though he'd seriously considered the offer, and his gaze shifted to the side, a thoughtful frown settling in as he wondered just how he was going to save face after that one. "Please forget I said that and pretend that I said... 'love to see you try'. Yes. That ought to do it."
