James wasn't an idiot. Oh, when he missed the glaringly obvious, it was sometimes a bit spectacular, but Remus was rarely obvious. Too much practice keeping big secrets, James would later suppose. But it was practically petulance that darted noticeably over Remus's features. No, not petulance. Something closer to indigence. Or, a rather telling sort of annoyance, the sort that flirted awfully close to something akin to jealousy, but not quite. And then too many things made too much sense, all at once, as he glanced back and forth between his two best friends.
But- no. No, James was certain he was wrong. He wasn't even buzzed yet, but he'd been feeling a bit addled for hours, and his brain was running off in all sorts of ridiculous directions. Surely, Remus wasn't interested in Adrian. That would've just been absurd. Even if it almost made sense. Because it couldn't actually make sense. Hell, Remus would've been hung up on Sirius or something long before he got stuck on--
Oh.
Oh, no. That. That had to be a bad idea. Talk about way too complicated.
About three seconds it had taken James for this to all go bolting through his brain, little of it wearing on his face apart from the perplexed and puzzling furrow of his brow.
"A proper Shakespearean romance, we've got brewing," he said a bit dryly, because it wasn't in him to ignore something Sirius had said, even if the back half of his mind was trying to not let itself get too boggled. "Now, sit," James instructed unnecessarily, seeing as to how Sirius was sitting already, but it boded well for his frame of mind. How long had it been, after all, since Remus and Sirius were telling him everything was fine? And for good measure, he added, "And stay," as he rose from his seat to follow Remus.
He didn't feel the need to tell Sirius that he'd of course explain it later, as soon as he knew what was going on. Well, knew for sure. He'd been wrong before, after all. And either way, he'd think of something to tell Sirius.
Remus had hardly gotten far, so it took James little effort to catch up with him, but he let them get a little further away, just in case. A good portion of his cavalier air had dissipated when he asked, "Hey, you-- you okay?" as he put a hand on Remus's shoulder.
Sometimes it took James a while to get it that something serious was going on, but once it got through, he did his best not to faff around.
