'Second chance' felt like maybe they might have been overstating things. It was for them, sort of. Maybe. For however long it lasted. But they had months left to live. Some people had decades. Some people had families and lives from which they were completely estranged-- and there was something a little tragic about that, too. Not that it helped to dwell on the negative.
Plus, they all might have accidentally strayed into the afterlife, and the time for abstaining from eating the food and drinking the water had long since passed.
His voice was a little softer when he said, "It is whatever it is, and whatever other people want to do with it... you can't make everybody be happy, Lils."
