Oliver could feel the kiss down to his toes, and then it abruptly ended. At her words, Oliver took two full steps back. "Right, yeah," he said, looking anywhere but at her. Of course, she was married. What had he been thinking? He opened his mouth to apologise but then decided against it; she was the married woman and she had been the one to ask. It wouldn't have been his place to remind her of her marriage, that wasn't fair to her or to her ability, her right to make her own decisions independently of his influence. Still... she was married. That sucked.
"Right, yeah, I know." Oliver looked at her then and offered her a tight-lipped smile. "Won't happen again." A beat later, he added, "Isn't there supposed to be a librarian here, so that I can take out this book? I want to know what else it says about me." That was a rather conceited thing to say, wasn't it? This time, Oliver had the decency to blush.
