The point of the matter was that Regulus was wary of talking to anyone who was affiliated with the Death Eaters. Sirius, James, and Lupin were all aware of the fact that he was dead, so there was no saying that people he had known, people he had worked with, people who would think that he had betrayed them wouldn't know as well. However, he had also spent the better part of his time here having run-ins with Sirius, James, and Lupin, so he was more than ready to see people he had actually considered friends again.
He wanted to see Bella again, but he knew that her rejection would hurt the worst, would threaten to undo him. He didn't know if there way any way to explain what he had done to her. She had always worshipped the Dark Lord, had spent her entire adult life serving him almost fanatically. Regulus couldn't stand it. He couldn't stomach it. No cousin of his should have been bowed before that half-blood maniac. Regulus couldn't understand the blind faith that she had in the man. He hadn't ever done anything for them but kill them and take them apart. Regulus was certain that he had never cared about the cause at all, but had just used them all as scapegoats. He knew it wouldn't be that easy to explain it to Bella, however.
Severus, though. Severus might be different. They had been friends before Regulus had joined the Death Eaters. And maybe Regulus just liked to think of Severus as different as the rest of them. Maybe that was a foolish belief. He also knew that their last meeting would change everything - he knew that it would make things either better or so much worse between them. Unfortunately, Regulus hadn't been around long enough to figure out which reaction it was going to be. His insides were coiled tightly together and he could only hope that Severus wouldn't hate him for everything he had done, but would understand. He had to, didn't he? And if he won over Severus, he might be able to win over Bella - to make them see that there was a different, better way of handling everything.
He knew there was only one way to find out and that was to actually see Severus. It was perhaps incredibly stupid. Severus had been very short with him over the journals and Regulus didn't exactly know why that was. He didn't dare ask for permission to visit, because he was too afraid that he would be rejected straight away. Instead, he figured out where Severus lived and trudged over to where his bungalow was before knocking tentatively on the door.
