Oh, Leslie latched on to the conversation about wands like a dragon coming after its prey; he chuckled and responded quite enthusiastically, as this was his favorite topic. "A wand is simply a tool, a means by which a wizard may channel the magical forces that naturally surround us and direct it in a more useful way. The mechanics are very interesting, though sadly not as researched as one might hope. That's because the magical forces are something that is difficult to quantify, though there are means by which they may be detected. It takes a great deal of concentration, at first, to be able to cast spells without wands, as well as a bit of determination, but every wizard has the potential locked within his or her own self to learn."
It was completely off topic, but Leslie eventually realized this and became silent, lest he bore Verity to tears. He did confess, "The scones were purchased in the bakery, down the road. I am a very simple cook. I surprise myself when I am able to butter the correct side of the bread."
He considered her question before answering. "I'm afraid I don't know. But to be perfectly honest, I assumed their laws were dictated more by whim than any other specific outline."
