The girl was right, nine months was a stupid long time to try and erase. Steve didn't imagine Lucas tried to erase all nine months. Verity was small, she likely didn't show for a while. Hopefully for her, it hadn't been more than five months. Not that five months was any better than one hour, but it was much better than nine months. "That's probably why you're remembering things," he added. Verity seemed to be calming, and when she slid down the wall, Steve was able to relax. Following suit, Steve too slid down the wall and settled back on the floor. It was easier down here, for some reason. He wasn't about to try to understand it, but maybe it was because he didn't have to worry about keeping himself upright.
"Once," Steve admitting. "Lucas was so angry. It was wrapped in a white blanket though, and I didn't hold it. The doctor was holding it. I - I never asked to hold it." That was something Steve regretted. He should have held the baby and taken it away from Lucas. He should have realized Lucas was so far beyond sane his pleading wouldn't work.
Letting his head fall against the wall, Steve shrugged. "I don't really know. He has family there, but I never asked. I could try and find out..." Steve trailed off. Why was he offering that? What if he found out the baby wasn't there, or worse, that family never existed?
Feeling an overwhelming urge to comfort Verity, Steve reached out before he realized what he was doing. Snapping his hand backwards at once, Steve's elbow hit the wall, bringing even more attention to his inappropriate actions. Clearing his throat, Steve's cheeks turned a bit pink. "No one knows if they'll be a good parent until it happens. It's a lot of trial and error, you'd probably make a fine mum with some practice. No one's good at it first go."
