Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Penelope & Sam Bradley
When: Tuesday, July 22, 2002 -- fairly late in the evening, we'll say 10:30-ish.
Where: Sam's home in Kent.
What: Random interaction after the wedding. Because I've been neglectful. *hangs head*

Since the night o the ball, Penelope had been forced to compromise her hours at work-- she never did like for work to go unfinished or for it to carry on into the next day. So that had meant many nights working late, and in some cases, even bringing it home with her. She often stayed up well past midnight, ignoring her body's protests for the true eight requisite hours of sleep.

On this particular night, she'd arrived home surprisingly early. A little after ten, to a dimly lit, unfamiliar home. She couldn't be sure if Sam was asleep; he might've been, and if he in fact wasn't, then he was more than likely holed up in his room, reading. She couldn't be sure. It mostly depended upon how fussy Gabriel was being.

She ambled on tiredly past the kitchen, dragging her feet until letting herself fall back against the cushions of the couch. Shifting some, she then curled up a bit, her head on the armrest as she closed her eyes.

Though they wouldn't remain that way long. Her mobile (kept solely for the purpose of keeping in touch with her muggle parents and brother) began to vibrate in the pocket of her jeans, and she gave a bit of an annoyed huff before retrieving the phone.

Peter's new number, she recognised it. "Whatever it is, it can wait until tomorrow," she sighed before ignoring the call and pocketing the phone, ready to curl up again and rest herself, never mind that she had her own room and bed down the corridor, waiting for her. She couldn't be bothered to move, not right now.

Sam hadn't heard Penelope come in, but Gabriel had. He started crying as he was stirred out of sleep. Closing his eyes, Sam dropped his head back against the wall and shut his book. So close to a routine. He figured his son must need a change so he pulled himself out of bed, abandoning his book, and opened his door, the light falling on the floor, harsh and bright in the dimly lit house.

In his boxers and a tank top, Sam went across the hall and checked on his son. "Come on, little pea," he cooed, picking up the boy to see if he was wet. Nope. "What's wrong?" He set him back in the crib and rubbed his tummy gently. "Shh." Gabriel kept crying. Sam leaned his chin on the rail of the crib, still rubbing Gabe's stomach and sang quietly, "What is it with this town? Every time we win, it just feels like losing. We were never gonna fit in, I was a mixed up kid and you were my sanity."

It took a few minutes of singing, but finally Gabriel quieted and Sam crept out of the room and headed for the kitchen. He was just about to go in the door when his ears perked. He peered into the living room, eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness, "Hello?"

She'd let out a soft sigh as soon as she'd heard the baby's first cries; apparently her entrance hadn't been quite as quiet as she'd hoped for. And while Gabriel hadn't yet bonded with her, she was hoping that she might be able to settle him before he'd wake up Sam-- she did hate to be an inconvenience for the two, especially as they seemed to have had their very own little nightly routine.

She sat up, slowly, but then noticed the light. Perhaps Sam had already been awake..?

Well, if anything, at least he was taking care of it. She could hear him in the other room, though she couldn't necessarily tell what he was saying.. or even singing, rather.

Penelope made a reach for her ponytail, tugging her hair free from the elastic band before scrubbing at her eyes with her hands, dropping her head to the armrest again. And to think, she'd been so close..

"I'm sorry, Sam. I meant to be quiet, but I guess it wasn't enough-- is he all right now?" she asked tiredly at his soft-spoken hello, toeing off her shoes. She still had no intention of vacating her spot, not now that she was settled.

"He's fine. He just thought he had a visitor," Sam smiled. "Are you hungry?" He was going to make himself something to snack, he thought he might as well offer. His eyes dropped to the floor though, still feeling somewhat guilty over having kissed Susan.

"I really am, actually.. I thought about apparating home at about eight, just for a small break if anything. But by the time I'd finally convinced myself to leave, there was more paperwork on my desk."

Her eyes having adjusted to the dark, she noticed that his eyes were fixed on the floor-- usually a telltale sign that somebody had something on their mind. "Something wrong?"

"No, everything's fine," Sam nodded. He looked up, into the darkness of the living room, smiled even though he couldn't see her. "What would you like to eat? I was going to make myself a grilled cheese sandwich, but I think there's pasta in the fridge and salad."

"If you're sure," she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders, lazily stretching out her legs before pulling herself up and onto her feet again. "And I'll make sure the pasta doesn't go to waste." She found herself reassured by the faint smile and then followed him into the kitchen, leaving him to make his grilled cheese sandwich.

"I would've fallen asleep on the couch with an empty stomach if you hadn't found me," she said with a half-smile, never mind that they weren't even facing one another. Digging past the contents of the fridge, she found what was left of the pasta and set it on the table, withdrawing her wand to cast a simple warming charm.

Now, all she needed was a fork...

She looked around the kitchen a bit helplessly, then went to investigating the kitchen drawers, successfully finding the utensils after her third try. "I can barely remember where things were in my own kitchen, let alone this one."

"It's all set up for convenience," Sam smiled, turning on the stove. "All utensils and dishes are within reach of the stove." He motioned to the line of drawers next to where he stood, and the two cupboards above the counter. He went to get the things needed to make his sandwich.

It took a moment, but then he had the bread and cheese in the pan, cooking away. He leaned on the counter and asked, "Long day?" He knew it was obviously a long day, but maybe she'd tell him a bit about it. Just to talk.
