Who: Su and Daniel
What: Their first meeting
Rating: TBD, but I'm sure it will be low

Out of nerves, Su had closed her section of the shop early and walked down the street to the Leaky Cauldron. She couldn't believe what was happening, and the cards were proving to be a spectacular lack of help. All they were telling her was that big changes were ahead and that she needed to remain calm and collected.

Her voice shook as she ordered a drink and sat down at a table in the corner. It allowed her to see everyone in the place, and spot Daniel when he arrived. A quick glance around the pub showed that she was the only Asian in the place, so she was sure that he wouldn't have a hard time spotting her.

The barkeep brought her drink over with a small smile and a familiar greeting, but quickly left after noticing how out of sorts Su was. Instead of taking a sip of the beer that she had ordered, Su ran her finger around the rim of it, waiting for Daniel to arrive.

Daniel looked at his watch, took a deep breath and walked into the Leaky. He had nervously walked around Diagon Alley for the last twenty minutes trying to calm himself. This was ridiculous. He had to relax. She was just a girl and by the tiny bit of conversations in the journals, a nice one.

He looked around the place as he pushed his hair out of his eyes. Daniel spotted her sitting in the corner with a beer. She was rather pretty and that didn't help his nerves at all. Rubbing his hands against his jeans, he walked over with a small smile on his face. "Um, Su? Hi. I'm Daniel."

At Daniel's arrival, Su stood up quickly, causing the chair to make a terrible sound as it scooted backwards. She cringed at the sound, wondering how it was possible for her to have made such a fool of herself in such a short amount of time. She offered him a weak and small smile before gesturing to the chair opposite her own.

"Please, sit," Su said in a small voice, looking around and wondering if anyone had noticed their awkward greeting. "Would you like to order something for lunch?"

Daniel bit his lip when her chair scraped the floor. His nerves were so tightly wound that he wanted to laugh, but she looked embarrassed as it was and didn't want to hurt her feelings. "Thanks. No, I'm not very hungry. I'll just have something to drink."

He sat in the chair opposite where she sat. "So, how do we start this off?" Daniel couldn't help but laugh a little now, though it came out a bit louder than he intended. "I'm sorry, I just. This is kind of awkward. So what house were you?"

"I was a Ravenclaw. Class of '98," Su said to answer his question, her smile growing slightly more comfortable. If he stuck to easy questions, maybe she could adjust to this a little better. "Like my father." The rest of the story hung untold, perhaps for another day. Daniel didn't need to know about the problems she had had with her father growing up. Not yet at least.

"What about you?" Su asked, looking across the table curiously. He didn't seem like a Slytherin, but she wasn't sure which he could be out of the last three. He certainly wasn't in her year, and if she had to guess, he was older.

"My mum was a Ravenclaw," he smiled. Daniel crossed his legs under the table, which caused his knee to thud against the underside of the table. "Sorry," he shook his head a bit embarrassed. "I was in Hufflepuff. Class of '96." Daniel folded his hands on top of the table. "I played Quidditch my seventh year, but I wasn't very good. I was Seeker. Did you play at all?"

The waiter came by and he ordered a butter beer. "Did you want something else?"

"No, I never played," Su shook her head slightly, pulling a funny face at the thought of herself playing quidditch. "I'd say rather obviously that I'm not a good choice for quidditch... I do like flying every now and then though."

Su shook her head, giving the waiter a familiar and more comfortable smile then the one she had given him earlier. It was really helping Su that Daniel was so friendly and that things seemed awkward and hard for him too. The fact that he was a Hufflepuff also seemed encouraging.

"So you work at the menagerie?"

"Flying's one of my favorite things," Daniel nodded as the waiter walked off. "Just being outside in general really."

He nodded again at her question. "Yeah, just part time though. I'm finishing up at the university. Start my last year in the fall." Daniel ran a hand through his hair. He was starting to relax a bit with her, but not enough to stop fidgeting. "You do, um, divination? I'm sorry, I don't know if that's the proper term? I was absolutely horrible at that sort of thing in school." He shrugged and gave her a little smile.

"It's alright," Su said in a soft voice with an assuring smile, "it is divination. I prefer to use tarot cards, though I'm versed in all different methods. I find reading tea leaves a little...skeptical, though."

"That's great about university," Su said with a tone that showed she was genuinely impressed. "Your parents must be so proud." Again, a story hung untold at the end of that statement, but Su didn't pursue it.

"Divination is an art that doesn't necessarily get well received," Su added, looking down at the table and tucking a lock of hair behind her ear.

"I like looking at the pictures on tarot cards. I just like art though." Daniel nodded and smiled at the waiter when he brought over his drink. He took a small sip and continued to talk. "I like drawing, though more just for fun than actual real artistry."

Daniel looked down at his glass, traced the condensation with his fingers. "Yeah, they're proud. Dad wanted me to be a teacher like him, mum wanted a doctor. I want to teach Care of Magical Creatures. Animals are much easier to please than people," he sort of laughed and shook his head.

He looked back up at Su at her last remark and wondered a moment at the quiet girl before him. "Maybe it scares people a bit? The idea that you know what their future holds and they don't and that maybe it isn't so good," he suggested quietly.

"I suppose you're getting a little bit of the best of both worlds?" Su asked with a small smile as she thought about it. "You'd be teaching, and to an extent you'd be a doctor for animals...." It might have been a bit of a stretch, but Su thought it made sense. It certainly allowed him to fulfill his parents goals for him much more than Su did. At least on her father's side, her mother was very proud of her daughter and her career.

"I think you might be a little kind," Su said in an equally soft voice, "I think people just don't have a lot of respect for my craft."

"I suppose," he smiled. " I just, I love animals. Plus I've always loved being in school. You get a few teachers that just inspire you and make you want to learn." Daniel ran his hand through his hair a little embarrassed at his own exuberance. "I think it would be great to be able to give that to some other kid."

Daniel looked at her and without thinking he reached across the table and squeezed her hand gently. He just wanted to comfort this sweet girl who seemed to be very much stuck inside herself. "I'm sure you do a lot of good, guiding and helping those who respect and believe." He smiled softly, reassuringly at her.

There was something softly comforting about Daniel, and his support of Su's profession, even though he didn't know her. It was a refreshing feeling, not wondering if someone was judging her because she made a living off of divination, an art that was treated with a lot of skepticism. She wanted to thank him, but found that the words were sticking in her throat as she looked across the table at him. He really was fit, and Su never imagined she'd ever be with someone this nice and good looking.

"Did any of professors at Hogwarts inspire you?" Su finally asked, switching to a safer topic. She was quite interested to hear if any of them had, since she had had many of the same professors at the same time.

"Professor Sinistra and, strangely enough, Professor Hagrid." Daniel smiled warmly and released Su's hand, gesturing as he spoke. "They both had such enthusiasm for their subjects, it made it hard not to want to learn." He took another drink of his beer and went on. "I know Hagrid was a bit...unconventional, but he really saw the good in the animals. He wanted to get people to understand them not as creatures, but as intelligent beings."

"I can understand that," Su said with a warm smile. Though some of her fellow Ravenclaws had found Hagrid an idiot, Su had actually cared for him quite a bit. At least when he wasn't trying to teach them about horrifyingly dangerous creatures...

"But you don't have his same...inclination for dangerous creatures, do you?" Su asked her eyes shining with a hint of nervousness. She really didn't like the thought of having to worry about him everyday because he was dealing with creatures that could kill him in an instant.

"No, not really. They're certainly interesting, but no. I like things like Clabberts or Crups. They're pretty harmless, but they're good for guarding things." Daniel smiled and sipped his beer. She actually seemed concerned about him. It was sweet.

"What about you? Who did you like at Hogwarts?" He wondered if she liked Trelawney. He thought the woman was a bit nuts, but he felt bad the way that the other students made fun of her. If Dumbledore hired her, he must have had his reasons.

"I think my favorite would be...Flitwick. He was eccentric, but really seemed to love what he was doing... I liked Hagrid a lot too..." Su paused, anticipating the question that he hadn't vocalized. "As for Trelawney...... Well, my mother respects her mother, so I suppose that's something. She never really showed an aptitutde for tarot readings, so I suppose we had a hard time seeing eye to eye on the subject of divination sometimes..."

Su tried to phrase it as tactfully as possible, omitting her own mother's harsh criticisms of Trelawney's lack of ability. Even Su, who wasn't likely to criticize other people had to admit that Trelawney sometimes was a tarnish on the divinatory world.

"Flitwick was pretty cool," he smiled. "I was absolute pants at his class, but he didn't come down on me for it." Unlike Snape, though he didn't like to speak ill of the man. He was quite inspired at what he did. Plus, his mother always told him it wasn't nice to speak ill of the dead.

He nodded at her words on the subject of Trelawney. Su obviously didn't think she was all that amazing, but she spoke politely and that impressed him. "So do you have a flat here in Diagon?"

"I was pretty average in his class as well," Su nodded, though she was holding herself up to her father's and a Ravenclaw standard. Most people would be happy to have received the marks Su did in most of her classes. But as Ravenclaws were wont to do, Su didn't find her preformance that impressive. "I was fairly average in all of my classes, to be honest."

"I do," Su nodded in agreement, "it's above the shop that I rent out with another woman, Cassandra. We named the place after her, Cassandra's Corner. Since her name has more to do with divinatory practices than mine does..."

"Though our business doesn't always pay that well, the flat is actually surprisingly big," Su added with a little smile as she thought about her cozy flat. "I really like being able to look down on the streets at night... There's something really peaceful about it." Su's eyes and voice showed the sincerity of her statement.

"Well," he began and ran a hand through his hair again. "that sounds really nice." Daniel licked his bottom lip and bit it lightly. "Um, I guess we should kind of talk about that, though." He looked up at her hesitantly. "Since we're supposed to be married and all. Did you want to share a flat?" He smiled a bit sheepishly. "Not that I don't have my own place or anything and we could have seperate rooms. I'm not some creep that expects something just because." He was babbling now and felt a bit odd. Things were going so well, but he knew they needed to talk about these things.

Su nodded in agreement, licked her lips delicately and then added, "and also talk about details for the wedding."

At the question of whether they wanted to share a flat, and then Daniel's hurried backtracking, Su's face flushed slightly. She was actually more uncomfortable with his reaction than the thought of moving in with him. He seemed so nice and gentle, that Su actually felt surprisingly fine to live with him. He was hundreds of times better than she'd ever expected, for sure.

"I think we should," Su nodded, "I imagine the ministry will be forcing that next... Might be good to get it out of the way..."

"Are you thinking your place would be better?" Su asked curiously, thinking about her flat and realizing that she probably couldn't fit another person and all his stuff in it comfortably. It would be nice to still have to escape to when work was slow, however.

"Yes, we should talk about that too." Daniel played with the label on his beer and bit his lip again. His nerves were starting to build again.

"Well actually I was thinking we could pick out a place together. So it's not just yours or mine. What do you think?" He really didn't want to make her uncomfortable or feel unwelcome in his place. Renae always told him she never felt like she really belonged there.

"We can do that," Su nodded, then added, "of if you're really attached to your place, I don't mind moving in.... It's up to you." Su added the last bit, wondering internally if she sounded too aggressive, like she was inviting herself to stay with him. She really liked him so far and wanted this to go right.

The more she thought about it, the more she realized her place wasn't an option. But that didn't mean that she didn't want to invite him over sometime. Perhaps they'd make dinner at her place one night or something.... Or maybe he'd want to see where she worked. Su knew she was eager to go to the menagerie with him. It would be interesting to see him in his element, just like she'd also like to see the university.

"I think a fresh start for us both would be good," he smiled reassuringly. Daniel took a small drink of his beer. "So would you want to stay in Diagon? It would make things easy for both our jobs." He nodded and played with the label. "University isn't far off from there in another part of wizarding London and apparating there is easy enough."

He looked thoughtful a moment. "I know you said she's cute, but are you allergic to cats? I'd really like to keep Bella."

"I think Diagon would be a very good idea," Su agreed. She'd gotten quite attached to the area, and it was convenient to be so close to work. Sometimes she'd set up a little stand out in the street, like her mother still did, and it was nice to get walk-by business like that. And if they got a new place, then she'd have a new area to get potential customers. It might seem as though Su was overly preoccupied with money, but it was necessary with business as it was.

"I'm not allergic at all," Su shook her head with a smile, "I'm looking forward to meeting her. She seems like a sweetie." Su had never had the oppportunity to have a pet, as her mother didn't particularly like pets.

"Great," he smiled. "I'll keep my eyes open for places for rent and let you know what I find. We can check them out together." Daniel was relieved a bit. This seemed to be going so well.

"So, um, about the wedding?" He chewed his lip nervously. "I'm not religious or anything, neither is my family, so however you want to do it is fine with me." Daniel looked at her, his stomach twisting slightly. He wasn't opposed to marriage, but the idea of it becoming a reality with a person who despite being nice was a complete stranger scared him a little. He gave her a small smile. "I'm not sure what to do in that department. Did you want something small or do you have a lot of family?"

"Something small would be lovely," Su nodded, thinking about the daydreams she had had of her wedding when she was a child. "I certainly don't want to do a traditional Taiwanese wedding. They're so...loud and just too much to handle. A small ceremony would suit me just fine."

"My family is very small, as well," Su said with a small smile, "so you can invite as many people as you want. Most of my father's family probably won't be able to make it." Which was probably for the best, Su thought with a mental shrug. It could create quite the culture clash...

"Small. Okay, I can do that," he smiled. "I don't know how much time we have to do this in. I guess we need to find out and then set a date." Daniel didn't bother looking at the fine print on the letter he'd recieved. He was too shocked by the fact that the girl was a total stranger.

"Where would you want to do it?" He looked thoughtful. Did they have to do it in a church or the park? He'd never really thought about the details when he thought about getting married, more just that he'd do it.

"I imagine sooner rather than later," Su said softly, thinking of the letter that she had read backwards and forwards. She could probably recite most of it. She wasn't a Ravenclaw by fluke.

"A church? A park?" Su suggested, chewing on her lip as she thought about it. Both seemed like good options to her, even though she didn't feel any strong religious affiliation. "Maybe a park, to keep it casual and simple?"

"I think a park would be great," he smiled sincerely. "There's some great parks in muggle London if you'd like to do it there." Daniel took a sip of his beer as he tried to think of somewhere else. "Or maybe the hillside in Hogsmeade?"

Daniel sat back a little in his chair trying to think of the various things they might need. He looked at her and nodded, smiling shyly as the thought occured to him. "We'll need rings too. Do you prefer white or yellow gold? Or we could get something made with both?" He looked down at his hands wondering how strange it would look to him.

"A muggle park sounds interesting," Su said with a small smile. It could look so beautiful, and her mother would certainly approve. Her father would probably have no opinion on the matter, but she would want to know if Daniel's parents would like it as well. "Would your parents like it? I think mine would...."

"I think gold would look good for both of us," Su said in a small voice after thinking about it for a few seconds. "But what do you think?"

"I'm sure they would," he nodded. Daniel smiled at her. "Dad's an old softy with a penchant for muggle things. He'd probably find it romantic." He shook his head smiling fondly. He really did take after his dad more, though he had his mother's thirst for knowledge.

"Actually I kind of like the idea of both." He looked down, a blush rising on his cheeks. "It's like you take two different things and join them to make one beautiful thing. It sort of makes me think of how marriage is supposed to be." Maybe it was a little dorky and romantic and he hoped he didn't scare her talking that way, but that was just how he felt.

Su listened to Daniel talk, and realized with a small shock that she really enjoyed spending time with him. When he got the soft look and tone in his voice, it made Su want to keep spending time with him. And keep making him act like that.

It made her heart feel light and flighty in her chest, a feeling that she was slowly getting adjusted to. "Sounds like something we should go look into, then," Su said with a small smile, "I know a couple of jewelry stores. We'll see what they have?"

"I wouldn't mind eating something," Su nodded, realizing that she hadn't had anything to eat since the night before. She wasn't a huge breakfast person, and didn't have anything this morning with the shape that her nerves had been. She couldn't stomach anything. But now, she was actually quite comfortable.

She sat back in her chair and smiled to herself, thinking that this wasn't going to be as bad as she had possibly thought.

"So do you have a lot of things to move?" He smiled embarrassed. "I'm sorry that came out a bit rude. I'm just trying to get an idea of how big a place we might need to find." Daniel ran a hand through his hair and laughed softly.

OOC: yeah I think that's a good idea, just close this. We can say the marriage occured, say on Saturday, July 5th at Regents Park in London. Only his parents came and a few friends from his Uni. Maybe the next thread could be them moving in? What do you think?
