So, this is weird.

At least that tornado didn't trash my bike.

Yeah. I was holding onto it for dear life.

I think I'll be alright. Thanks for the welcome. Name's Mutt.

It's good it didn't crush you then.

Candy. ... is Mutt a nickname?

It was close, but I've broken a leg or two before.

Yeah, but I hate being named Henry.

Well, yeah, but nobody wants to break more bones. Still. Glad you and your bike came through not broken.

I hate being called Candy, but nobody really ever gave me a nickname. I think I'm stuck being Candy Quackenbush, but that's okay. It could be worse.

That's not horrible. I could probably come up with a nickname for you.

Mutt was what we called the stray dog that we fed off the porch. Figured it fit, since I kinda wandered around aimlessly, but always headed back for the company.

Only if you want to.

You're lucky your dad wasn't mine for a lot of reasons. He would've ended up calling the dog - and you - Rambler. Do you know that song, "Ramblin' Man"?

No, I don't.

And my dad wasn't around. It's a long story.

I'll have to send you a copy.

... I'm sorry. Don't go into it unless you want to.

That'd be nice. I'll have to find a record player, I don't know if the clown I replaced has one.

No, it's nothing like that. Just a long story.

People don't really use those so much anymore. There's CD players and MP3 players and stuff. I can help you with those, if you want.

I think everyone who's brought here has a long story.

Uh, sure?

What's yours? I'd like to hear it, Candy.

I can try to explain how they work, too. But that's a little bit harder.

I don't even know if you'll believe me if I try to tell you.

These days I'll believe pretty much anything.

Where I lived in Minnesota, there was this abandoned lighthouse - in the middle of nowhere. A man and his brothers asked me to go up into the lighthouse and light the light. I didn't think anything would come of it, so I did it anyway. Turns out it summoned a sea that took me to another world - the Abarat. I learned how to do magic there, which helped a lot. Still does. That's where I was when I was brought here.

Let me guess - and now you think I'm crazy.

I've seen aliens with skeletons made of crystal, been shot at with poison darts, and watched my mom marry a guy who turned out to be the one who got her knocked up with me in the first place.

So, no, not really.

Wow, and I thought Dad polishing off three twelve-packs a day was a little hard to believe. Did the aliens have skin, or were they just the skeletons? That almost sounds pretty.

... sorry, morbid curiosity, Mom called it.

Wow. he must have had a liver of steel. Not to make light of it, I'm sure that was hard.

They were kind of pretty, really. But very scary. Just looking at them was enough to make my skin crawl. They messed with Ox, the guy who helped Mom raise me, made him go insane. And then they tried to do the same thing with Indiana, the guy my mom married. He's an archaeologist.

He's not here. It's a lot easier now.

Things that can make you go crazy are the worst. Kind of like the Fugit Brothers in the Abarat - their eyes and noses and mouths walked around independent of them. Worst thing I've ever seen. And archaeology's neat. Do you get along with him?

Oh, gross!

And now we get along okay. Except when anyone mentions school around him.

I never finished, even though I was smart. It was a waste of time, since I already knew how to do what I wanted.

They almost drove me completely crazy. I'm glad I escaped them when I did.

Well, that's good. And let me guess - he wants you to finish and then go to college? The person I replaced is... well, a princess. They wanted me to go to this fancy boarding school. I'm going to go to a school where I can learn magic too. Useful things. I will never, ever need calculus. I mean - I got shot by a Nazi a couple of weeks ago.

... time's kind of loose here.

I noticed that one. You're alright? Bullet wounds are nasty.

Then your dad's an awesome guy. They're ... let's just say they're the worst things I can think of.

I'm fine. Someone healed my leg for me. The people here are really nice, you'll find.

And the Nazis were pretty bad, but the Soviets are really creepy.

No, now we're at war with the Arabs.

It's just trading one nationality for another, really.
