So, now that we all know that a certain woman is on my brother's 'Not Loved' list...

Does anyone know someone who'd be willing to come over and help train our puppy? She's a good girl, but she's chewing everything up. We've bought her toys to chew, but she ignores them.

I am running out of socks. Daily. So, we need help.

I could help, my dad had a couple dogs and taught me how to train them.

Got any hot sauce?

We do, but...won't that hurt her?

Does it hurt you when you eat it?

What you need to do is put a little bit of it on everything she tends to go after. If she's smart, she'll stop trying to chew that stuff after about a week after you start putting it on things.

Lime juice does the trick, but you need a lot more of it. A little bit of tabasco goes a long way.

Tell you what. So long as Dean's okay with it, it's fine with me.

And I want in on the traffic cone shennanigans....

... You know how to ride a skateboard?

I'm six foot four. My center of balance sucks. So, no.

...why?

The plan is to find someone who can so we can set up an obstacle course down either the hallway of your place or my brother's place, and see if that person can skate through it.

... Wow, you're tall. I feel ridiculously short next to you for good reason now.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let the mocking commence. Dean's got a few amusing nicknames for me because of my height, I'm sure he'll let you borrow some.

That sounds....awesome. What about rollerblades? I'm halfway decent with them.

Oh come on, Sam. You probably get enough shit from your height as much as I do. Except, you know... We're two sides of the same coin. Being 5'6" isn't THAT great, either.

Rollerblades? That is EXCELLENT. I knew you were a genius.

Now go strap those puppies on, I'll be over in ten minutes with the cones.

Don't worry, Dean.
Give her her usual chew toys, just make sure the stuff she isn't supposed to chew tastes like hell.

... that makes a shocking amount of sense.

But I'm going to go get her some traffic cones now. Just in case.

Positive reenforcement. But if you want her to go after traffic cones whenever you take her out on a walk, by all means.

I'm not judging, really. I'm not. But where are your socks that your puppy can get to them?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]wnchestrgeekboy
2008-04-04 09:21 pm UTC (link)
Well, sometimes they're on the floor in my bedroom. But I close the door behind me, only to come back later to find shredded piles of sock where there once was a whole sock.

I'd be the first to blame myself, don't get me wrong. She steals them out of laundry baskets, too.

Don't you find it a bit... excessive... to hot-sauce your dog when you're the one leaving your socks around?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]wnchestrgeekboy
2008-04-04 09:59 pm UTC (link)
Yes...and no. Yeah, they shouldn't be left around, but no; she shouldn't be eating them. Or jumping up on people.

So, I'm trying to be responsible and get a trained professional's advice.

Makes sense, right?

I've trained my own dog to be pretty obedient, though it's not that hard if you already know good disciplinary and reward tactics. The hot sauce thing is a pretty good idea, and I could teach you methods I use. I think recognizing when they do something good is just as important as when they do something wrong.

...It might also help that I communicate to my dog through the Force. If you want, I could try to do the same with your puppy? It'd just be an impression of when she's doing something wrong and why. I do it with my puppy all the time.

You're absolutely right. I do give her plenty of praise for her good actions, but she's obsessed with socks.

You're more than welcome to try, though if you'd like. I'd never even thought to ask Jacen to come over and give that a try, to talk to her with the Force.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]miaj

I think some dogs latch onto one thing they love. Too bad about all your socks. They do have books and tapes and all sorts of stuff to help train your dog if nothing else works.

Oh, you know Jacen? He's like the animal guru, I hear. But I can still come over if you want and try.

Has she been around many other dogs? She could've picked up bad behavior from another dog. Alternatively, if you let her spend time with well-trained dogs, she may pick up on better behavior.
