New York's really different from how I remembered, though the buildings remain the same.

I used to be dead. I thought I was dead. Kind of hard to tell the difference between real drowning and losing my actual lung capacity.

Really? You were dead? Huh. I dunno what I'm doing here either.

Yes, I had thought to end my life before my body decided to do it for me. If I was going to drown, I decided it was to be on my terms.

Nancy Drew? I once knew a woman who collected those books. Something about all those twists and turns...excited her.

Ah, I guess I can understand that. Even if it's illegal.

Yeah that's me. Books? Oh right. There are books about me. I almost forgot. Well, adventures are pretty exciting, hence the word.

Suicide is illegal? Something I was unaware of. Were people offing themselves like lemmings and it called for a law?

You forgot that there are books about you? Interesting.

I think so? But usually the people who do it are dead so going to jail is moot. It's one of those dumb laws like no oral or anal sex. Apparently so.

I was here once before I think? And now I'm back. It's weird. I'm different, but I remember.. books.

There have always been laws against the strange and unusual. Society keeps it exotic practices such as someone lapping at woman's pussy like a dog in heat. Do you know about that kind of thing? I bet you're the innocent little girl who's least likely to be corrupted in anyway.

Yeah I guess so. People don't like what they don't understand. Know about sex? Well, sort of. I mean I'm not that innocent. It's 2008 and all. I'm incorruptible? I suppose that's because I have a high moral resolute.

Knowing about it and truly experiencing things of that...nature are very different. 2008. Huh. I died almost fifty years ago.

Mm well like you said, I'm incorruptible. Fifty years ago? Huh. My first book was in 1932, so I can understand.

Everyone is corruptible. Some just take longer to break. We're two very ancient figures, though no one would know who I am. You, however, are a household name.

What did you want, Nancy?

The pleasure's all mine.

Want? I had to want something? Sorry, I'll leave you be. I didn't really want anything. I was just saying hi.

Oooh! That. Right. I almost forgot I said that. Sorry. Um, I don't know. I just like solving mysteries. Maybe I thought about being a detective. A real one. But well women weren't exactly able to do that back then.

Well I just got here like a second ago? That vortex dropped me here. I'm not even sure where I am to be honest. It wasn't the same place I was before. I suppose that's my first mystery.

To figure out the vortex and why it has plummeted you in another place and time for the second round. Nancy Drew and the Case of the Mysterious Vortex. Exciting.

I can't tell if you're being patronizing or not. And I don't get those titles. I mean really? That's all they could come up with? C'est la vie, I suppose.

And what about you? Have you figured out where you are or what's going on?

A boring book title is probably the least of your worries, Nancy.

I was on Coney Island, then I took the train back and I've found myself in Manhattan through a series of subways and bus stops. Coney Island has fairs and the occasional freak show. I believe I am an attraction there. Such is life.

I suppose so if I don't know where I am.

In a freak show? I didn't think they had those kinds of things anymore. Do you want to be there?

If you are out on a street, simply ask someone where you are.

I'm used to those. I've occupied the limelight in a few. Oh they still exist, just with more exotic and kinkier sides of life exhibited in them now.

There doesn't seem to be anyone around. I haven't not seen this many people since I went to that ranch in Phoenix.

Oh. I suppose that strikes your fancy then, so to speak?

Describe the location you are in then.

Being in the limelight or the more exotic and kinky aspect of the shows now.

There's a lot of fields. Don't see any houses. But the fields I'm pretty sure don't have any crops growing in them. At least not presently. There's a marker. It says mile 7. No names though. I've been walking a while and I still haven't found anything.

The ... latter part.

If it's anywhere near New York, then it could be Martha's Vineyard.

What exactly do you know of kinky and exotic?

Didn't think New York had plains like this. I'll keep walking I guess.

Nothing at all. I'm completely innocent as a newborn babe. I just wondered if that's why you liked being there. Which you haven't answered.

Do you have a phone? Could try calling for help.

Mm, I feel right at home amongst it. You rediscover yourself in those kinds of surroundings.

Would you like to be introduced to it?

The vortex has a sense of humor perhaps.

It's a yes or no. Don't be shy. I won't bite.

Perhaps. I didn't think they had fields in Maine either.

Oh but I think you do bite. No wait, you said won't, not don't.

Are you offering to show me?

Yes. And now you are not answering my question.
