Your mother did mention she was a Witch of the Wilds, but I thought the dragon parts of those tales were just story.

I'm...actually kind of envious. Not of the lack of control part, though I see now why you're so worried about it. But to turn into a dragon. That would be...beyond words.

They are. Mostly.

It's not really something to be envious of. People don't react well to dragons, and the longer I'm not in control, the more dangerous it is to me and to anyone around me.

People don't react well to shapeshifters or mages in general, in my experience. A dragon's a lot more dramatic than other forms, I'll grant you.

It's still progress. It took me years to learn how to control my powers too, and they were a lot less, um, volatile than it sounds like yours are. Any sort of power takes time to learn how to use. Don't belittle what you're accomplishing just because it's taking a long time, okay? You can do this.

...actually, if that girl really does come from the future, you have done this. Sort of.

Yeah, it was awkward for me, too. I ended up at Mum and Dad's while Aunt Nelle was babysitting me. And the little me is still here too. I made Mum faint. Just make sure you have soft things for your parents to land on.
