Okay, this city is incredibly strange, beautiful but strange, but I need to get back to Hokkan immediately. I can't let the Shinzaho fall into that monster's hands! Miaka and Tamahome could be in danger!

Unfortunately for you, the vortex doesn't seem to care if people are in danger or not. It just took a fancy to you and decided to swoop down and dump you here.

In the fewest words possible: welcome to an alternate universe. Weird things happen, weird people happen, but overall it's nice. Just don't gawk at the elves or the legendary people too much.

That would explain the cyclone that appeared out of no where.

Alternate universe. Okay. I think I can handle that. I knew a girl from another world where I came from, so not so weird. I won't gawk at them, promise. Unless they gawk at me first.

It is. I like the lights, didn't have anything like that where I came from. I've never seen a city like this before.

The lights...huh. I haven't seen it at night yet. You're right, that might be worth seeing. I've never seen a city like this either. I didn't know it was possible to make buildings this tall.

I'm getting used to it, but I still wish the air were cleaner. And there's so much sound!

In my opinion, it's definitely worth seeing. Neither did I. Let alone making them out of glass and metal?

I thought the Kounan capital city was loud, but it has nothing on this place. This place could use some fresh air. And some space. Everything feels packed in.

And stone? I've seen buildings made out of stone, but this much stone? How did they mine it? There must be so many stairs. That wouldn't be a problem for me but I can't imagine how they get to the top. I'll look forward to night-time now, though. The view from the top must be something.

And yes, I know exactly what you mean and the air and space. I miss the sky, there's so little of it available with all the buildings in the way.

They must have vast mines somewhere outside the city. These buildings do look like they'd be tiring to try and walk all the way up. Though the view from the top must definitely be something! That's not a bad idea actually, might help in getting bearings. Though the lights do seem to block out most of the stars at night, which is sad.

It's hard to understand how these people go about their lives like this. But since it seems we're stuck here, we need to adapt to it. Still, I prefer traveling by horse and a bit less noise.

Do you want to try and see the view from the top later tonight then? I'd like company. And you seem to...well, come from a place more like mine then this, which is comforting.

You had horses? Oh, I'm jealous about that! There were a very few in Ferelden--sorry, that's where I'm from--and I only got to see them once or twice. I'd love to turn into ride a horse.

I would like that, yes. It is comforting meeting someone that comes from a similar place. I couldn't even begin to tell you what most of the things around here even are.

We did. I didn't own one personally, but the emperor let us borrow some when we needed to travel. Ferelden, huh? I'm from a land called Kounan. At least there isn't a war brewing here like there was in my home.

Oh, perhaps I should introduce myself. My name is Nuriko.

Me neither. Oh, it's a relief to meet someone else who's confused! and I'm Dar, sorry, I forgot. It's been a strange day. I went to sleep in the grasslands as usual and I woke up here and was nearly hit by some speeding metal thing, and it's just been one thing after another ever since.

You know an emperor? Wow. I've heard of an empress, but she lives--lived, I guess--far away. We had a king and queen in Ferelden. We had a war too, a few years ago, and there's still rumor of another one rumbling. It was...sort of helpful, for me, because I was kind of a fugitive there and it kept some of the authorities distracted. But apparently there's no one who'll chase me here. Still getting used to that idea. I won't miss the wars at all, or the darkspawn. And perhaps there are horses here, somewhere? There must be more than this city. Have you found out what it's called yet?

It's a pleasure to meet you, Dar. It's all right, I understand. I had been attacked and then I was suddenly here in this strange place. Those speeding metal chariots are a bit scary. How can they move without horses?

I do! He's actually a friend of mine. At least you won't be chased here, that is a good thing. So far this place does seem to be safe aside from those speeding things. We can always go find out if there are! I've been looking around. Even tried asking someone where I was, but they just looked at me like I was insane. But from what I can gather from some things I've read, I think it's called London.

It's a pleasure to meet you, too, Nuriko! You were being attacked when the tornado caught you? That's useful timing! Whoever was fighting you must be really confused. Hee. And yes, they are. Perhaps there are creatures underneath them running really fast? Though I've never seen any animal that could run that fast.

That makes sense. And I've seen a lot of shops around, perhaps we could get a map of whatever this world is, or at least of the city. If we could find out what they use for money here. I have one gold piece and a few silver ones, but I tried to buy some food earlier and they just looked at me funny.

It was useful, but now I worry for two of my friends I left behind. Now there's a thought, though I haven't seen any animal move that quickly either. Perhaps we should investigate what makes them move!

A map would be helpful, yes. I have some currency from my country, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work here. Though there's some strange things in my pockets that aren't mine. Maybe one of them can help us get something? Food would be a good start.

I'm sorry you left friends behind. I guess I'm lucky there, I haven't really left anyone behind, I mostly wander on my own. I have a teacher, but we...haven't really been on good terms lately. I wish I could have told him goodbye or something...but he'll be all right. I hope your two friends can at least take care of each other.

I just found one of those speeding things that wasn't moving! But when I looked underneath, it looks like it's made of pipes and gears and things. I guess it's not animals making it go. Maybe Alim can tell us. Have you met Alim? He's been giving me some useful advice.

Food would be good. I, um, stole some earlier, but that was hours ago. ...I don't know what you think about stealing? I don't do it often, but I was really hungry and confused. ...hey, I have strange things in my pockets too! Wait, I have pockets! I don't think I had pockets last night. Alim mentioned something about me having replaced someone. Could this be related, do you think?

I'm sorry you weren't on good terms with your teacher. It would've been nice to have been able to say goodbye or at least given them a little warning. Tamahome is good at protecting Miaka, so I think they'll be okay. As long as Miaka doesn't go and do something stupid like she has a tendency to do.

Huh now that is a strange thing indeed. No, I haven't met Alim yet. It might be a good bet to ask him if he knows what's going on around here.

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't really support stealing. But in this case, I think it's okay since you're new to this place and food is a necessity to living. Replaced someone? Maybe that would explain the plastic card I found in my pocket with a name and information that wasn't mine. I think it could be related, it certainly couldn't be a coincidence!

No, it wasn't like that, it...it's kind of embarrasing, really. We used to be on good terms and then I messed it up. I wish I could have apologized first, that's all. We'd been working with each other for a long time. Most of my life.

I'm sure Tamahome will take care of Miaka.

And yes, that sounds exactly like what Alim meant! He's from my world too (thank goodness someone is!), originally. Apparently torndaoes take people from their home worlds and bring them here and we replace people who were already here? But he doesn't think the ones we replace go to wherever we were. Which is probably good, given that you were being attacked and I was sleeping near a den of bears. Those would be nasty surprises for most people. I don't usually steal, truly, I don't usually have to.

What good is a plastic card? Are you sure it's not something like a playing card?

Ah, I understand. Perhaps he knows that you are sorry about messing up? If he's known you most of your life, then he must be able to understand your emotions and reactions in situations.

He will. And if he doesn't, well, I'll just have to give him a piece of my mind if I see him again. And possibly a black eye.

That's good you have someone from your own world here as well, that must make it easier. Ha, if the people we replaced end up where we were, I'd feel really really bad for the guy I replaced. That's a good thing, I don't usually have to steal either. I lived in a palace before I appeared here, so everything I wanted or needed was right there.

No, it's not a playing card. It has a picture on it, though, and what appears to be a person's name. Possibly where they live? It says London, England at the bottom. It seems to be some form of identification of the person I replaced. Do you have anything like that?

He probably does. But...I wish I could have told him he was right, I guess. But there's nothing I can do about it now. I guess we're both stuck there. We'll just have to trust that the people we left behind will do what they can.

You lived in a palace?!? No wonder you had horses! I can't imagine that!

I have something, but it looks like it's a...business card? For a pet store.

I have faith they will do what they need to. And we'll have to do what we need to to get by here. Though I think this will take some measure of adjustment for me and you, considering our backgrounds.

I did! I'm not exactly nobility or royal or anything, but the short version of the story is that I'm a special warrior. I was one of Seven Warriors that were to protect the Priestess of Suzaku and help her summon Suzaku, our god. The Warriors all were able to stay in the palace. The emperor was one of these Warriors, so that may be why.

A pet store? Have you gone to the store yet to see if you can find anything?

Yes, I think it will. Though it's not all bad. I could live on the streets here easily, so at least I know I can survive. That's always a good first step. ...sorry, seems strange to say that to someone who lived in a palace.

Special warriors? To help someone summon a god? That's...I don't actually believe in a maker or creator, so...lots of people do, where I'm from, I'm just not one of them. But I'll believe you. And that does sound special. Do you have unusual abilities then? We have warriors that are something like that, they're called Grey Wardens. I'm not one, though. But I am a mage, and I can turn into animals, a few anyway. ...it's so strange to be able to say that! I had to keep it a secret back there.

Alim--he's the other one from where I'm from, and he's one of the Grey Wardens I mentioned--is coming to help me find it. Maybe that will give me a clue!

Survival skills do come in handy in these sorts of situations. I didn't do a lot of traveling into the countryside and wild places until just recently, but I know enough to not get killed by some wild animal or something. It's all right, I didn't always live in the palace. I was born in a normal house, and lived there for most of my life until I came of age.

I do, I have super-human strength. So when I mentioned giving Tamahome a black eye? It'd be more like temporarily blinding him and sending him through a wall or two. I can pick up pretty much anything like it was a feather. Comes in useful when someone's buried under a collapsed building or a large boulder's blocking the way. No way, you can turn into animals? That's pretty neat! One of the other Warriors could turn into things, too. Animals, people, he could pretty much turn into whatever he wanted. Well, dear Dar, don't worry about keeping your secret here. I think that's cool, and perhaps people here will be more accepting of it.

Let me know if it does! I'm still trying to figure out who I replaced. I tried finding the place on the identification and it didn't seem to lead anywhere useful.

Anything? Really? I've never heard of anyone with strength like that, not even the Wardens! That's amazing!

And yes, I can shift into animals. Only three, so far--a rat, a sort of war-dog we call a mabari, and a falcon--but I'm hoping to learn more someday. That's one reason I keep mentioning horses. I would love to learn to turn into a horse! But it's also why I can survive nearly anywhere. It takes some attention, I've nearly gotten killed a lot while being a rat, but it also makes it easy to find food and a place to sleep without fear anytime I need one. While I'm out in the open I tend to stay a mabari or falcon, and in cities I usually go rat. It's less complicated. That's why I'm not worried about getting to the top of one of these skyscrapers. I can just fly up there. Oh, it's going to be wonderful to not have to hide this!

Maybe I can ask Alim to come help you after he's done with me. He seems nice.

Chichiri is a special character, and sometimes a little frightening in the sense of always popping out of no where with no warning. One minute you'd be standing somewhere alone, the next BAM! he appears right beside you. He had other powers, too. He was a monk, though he did know some magic.

Wow, it must be thrilling to experience the world as animals. That's it! We're going to find you a horse! Once we get the hang of this city, we'll track down a horse so you can learn about it and turn into it! And hey, if anyone here tries to give you trouble about your talents? Send 'em to me and I'll make sure they leave you alone.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I would appreciate that. Someone who knows this world better might have a better idea of where to go and what to do.

A monk? What's a monk? He sounds like he has a sense of mischief, anyway.

It is thrilling. Especially flying. Or running, or hiding in the walls and knowing no one can find you, or...it is thrilling. We should definitely find horses. It may take a long time for me to learn how to become one, but once I do, I'll be a horse and you can ride on my back if you like, and then we'll both get something we wanted. I'd like that. And thank you.

...actually, really, thank you. I can't remember anyone ever offering to protect me before. I haven't usually needed it, but I've also usually been alone. So even if that was a joke, thank you.

I'll definitely tell Alim. I'm sure he'll help you too.

A monk is a holy man, of sorts. They usually devote their lives to a deity or to study and contemplation. Ha that's Chichiri, usually trying to give us all a smile. Or a heart attack depending on how you look at it.

Sometimes I wish I could shapeshift like that, become something else. Hey, that sounds like a good deal to me!

You're welcome. And no, it wasn't a joke. People shouldn't be hassled for who they are and what they can do. Well, unless they're hurting innocent people, then something needs to be done. You aren't alone anymore, and I'm good at protecting and being peppy.

Thank you. Whoever I replaced seems almost as if they were a ghost or something.

Oh, we have those. Or at least the Andrastrians have them. They're called Chantry Brothers. I'd like to meet Chiriri.

I agree with you. I don't like it when people are cruel to each other for no purpose. Animals will attack and eat each other, but they don't do it for fun. Well, very few of them. If you're hurting someone because you need to in order to survive...well, it's not good, but I can understand it. I can't understand someone who hurts someone else just for pleasure.

I like you a lot, Nuriko. I'm so glad to have met you.

Hopefully you'll get the chance! If he shows up here, I'll definitely introduce you both.

Hurting someone out of survival is one thing, but hurting for the sake of hurting is another. I don't like cruel people, and I won't hesitate to put them all in their place. Well, at least all that cross my path anyways.

I like you too, Dar. I'm glad that fate let us meet.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. I'm not so good at the putting people in their place, I'm not much of a fighter. But I at least can warn others and get information to those who can make a difference, and that's good too.

I have a map now! If you tell me where you are I think I can find you, if you want. Alim gave me a lot of useful information; he had to run off but I can pass it on to you. It'd be easier in person though. Can you find any street names? They seem to do everything by street names here. I never thought so many streets existed in the world as are on this map...it's mostly straightforward, though.

Warning others is just as important as being able to fend off aggressors, so I think that's very useful. And hey, the shapeshifting makes it even easier for you to slip by people who'd want to hurt you.

You do? Excellent! The street names closest to me are Mervan Road and Talma Road. Just be careful coming here, I'm not so sure this is the best part of the city. This city is really quite strange. I thought Eiyo had a lot of streets, but this is kind of crazy.

That's exactly why I like it. Well, one reason.

Don't worry, I can take care of myself. Besides, I probably won't be coming as a person. If you see a falcon land nearby, please don't worry, that's me. Alim showed me this by the way, if you want a look. It's kind of hard to read though.

All right, if a falcon lands near me, I'll just hold my hand out to it. Just please don't peck me or anything. And that is really strange and hard to read, but the ID now makes sense. The portkeys are also quite odd, but convenient for traveling quickly. Certainly beats using horses over long distances!
