Santayana was a smart, smart man, for saying that.
I use it to my advantage as well; I can't help but enjoy mp3 players, phones, cars, microwaves, computers. They're all extremely efficient and useful, but on the other hand, they have lost their connection to the world from which they were created. The number of humans that have never seen the wilderness, never felt the thrill of the hunt or the joy of a night out under the stars is skyrocketing, and it's a shame. Of course they don't feel they need us, milady. They feel that they can live on their own. Like teenagers rebelling against their parents, they've become rebellious to their own guardians.
We have our supporters, sometimes, but rarely do they understand us, or our ways, our true reasons for being.
