That's awfully considerate of you, Drew. Did you tell your mom you wanted me to come look after her?

Nah, Ma'd try an' act strong. Say she don't need nobody.

But I'm the man of th'house since my Daddy don't live there, I need t'look out for her, un'erstand?

An' you's her uh. .friend. And you's a guy.

Get me, cowboy?

Loud and clear. I'll ask your mom when she wants me to come by.

Or, I guess I should be asking you; when's she supposed to be dropping you off at Dad's house?

Good.

We's leavin' at noon, but we's stoppin' for her to put in a plicashun with Mr. Carlos, so she'll be back around 12:30, I reckon.

Oh, I almos' forgot, you got my blessin'.

Right. How about you leave me a message when you two make it to the portkey, and I'll meet your ma at the one by your house when she's done- walk her home, and everything.

And thank you, Andrew, that's very nice of you to say. I don't want to rush your mother into anything, but she is a very nice woman, and I promise you, she'll be treated like a princess while I'm around.

Well, all right. I'll figger out some excuse to need t'leave someone a message.

Well, you treatin' her like a princess is fine by me. M'Daddy loved her but not th'way he shoulda. But Mama likes you lots, so it's fine by me so long as y'don't start hittin' her like Daddy kurt, or I might have t'tell Papaw. An' he'll shoot ya.

You don't want to tell her you're having me protect her?

I don't believe in hitting anyone, unless they're threatening the people I care about. Your mom's safe with me, Drew. I promise you, I won't lay a hand on her except to hug her and help her out of cars and silly, lovey-dovey stuff like that. And even if I did, for some strange reason, I have a feeling your mom'd take a chunk out of me before your Papaw even got to it.

Well, some people find it creepy, when new friends just show up unexpectedly. I don't want your mother to think I'm pressuring her into anything. I'd feel better if she knew I was going to be there first, so she could say it was okay.

Understood perfectly, friend.

Anytime you want to talk, I'll be around. You can just ask the girls to find me, or drop me a message on this thing, okay?

That's real nice 'f you, but you don't gotta be nice t'me just 'cause you like m'Mama. Don't make no difference to me, long asd she's not cryin' no more.

I'm not just being nice to you because I like your mom. You're also Rei and Fi's friend, and I was hoping you'd be my friend, too. It just so happens that your Mom and I get along real well, but you're a pretty cool person besides that, you know? Not a lotta people can win my sisters' friendship like you did. That makes you pretty darn cool, in my book.

Wow, that was really nice of her. I am something of a geek, and have a lot of games I've already beaten. If your mom doesn't object, I don't mind lending them for you to play 'em.

I like lots of car games, actually. That and sports, and Mario. I was talking more about her having you do chores, and homework, and all that other boring stuff, but you strike me as smart enough to know how much time you can spend goofing off.

Car games are cool! I aint got no sports games, but I got one Mario. He's. . weird. But it's a fun game.

Oh, chores? I aint got as many of those now that we aint onna ranch. I help Mama when she needs an' do my homework and mostly I stay outta the way.

It is odd, for a plumber to run around saving a princess, but the game's really fun. The one for the Wii is the best- I bought it for the girls, I'm sure they'd share.

Well, that's good. Sounds like you could use a game or two, to pass the time.

Oh, it does now? Cool. Yeah, you'll like it a lot.

If I minded, I wouldn't have offered. My dads always taught me to share what I had, if other people could use it, so I do. They're crazy-polite sometimes, but they don't mind getting loans or any of that. I think it's cause they're a little rude, too, but only when the have to be.

Huh. You know, I never thought of it that way. That's good to know.

Sure do. Mama's birday is September the 2nd. She don't like candy, s'you know. Them chalk-letts they sell inna box make her sick. But she really likes horses an' any perfume that dont make her smell like an old lady.

Yeah, an' y'know, you never know, you might end up likin' my Mama that way.

Well, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks, Andrew. Hey, now that we're on the topic, when's your birthday?

Hey, now, woah there. Your mom's an awesome woman, and I really, really like spending time with her, but I don't want to rush into something like marriage, y'know? I've only known her a couple weeks. That sort of decision takes a while. I'm not saying I couldn't- I mean, I- just... this is a little soon to be thinking about that, Drew.
