Is this Earth?

I do not recall any descriptions of space travel including a great twirling wind...

It is earth, or at least a very reasonable facsimile.

Are there generally facsimiles of planets?

Forgive my ignorance; it is only recently that my people became aware of the existence of other people on other worlds.

Not that I know of, but in my lifetime I've discovered things myself that I never would have imagined, so I suppose it's possible.

I see.

How is it that I have come to be here? There should be no scheduled journeys for some time. And I was told it would take many years, not seconds.

That I can't explain. I'm not sure how I got here either... but I guess I should be grateful I stay on my own planet. My god, you can change planets this way? .... Where are you from?

My world is Gethen in our tongue, and was named Winter by the first people from other worlds to find ours. I met a man from Earth. He spoke to me about it, taught me some of his words for things we did not name. Man. Woman. To fly...

That's good, that you at least know something. But it must be terrifying being transported suddenly to another planet without warning. I'm sorry.

It is strange, and a little frightening. However, I do not perceive any danger wherever it is I have landed, which is comforting. I have known too many people who have seen exile from their lands and worlds to allow terror to rule me here.

That's good. Do you have any idea where you are?

None yet. All I know is there are no people here who look like me, yet these people do not seem to find me worthy of much curiosity. I am listening to the others for place-names, should they speak them.

Is there any particular place I should be seeking?

You must look "normal" enough to them, or be in a place where "normal" isn't exactly expected.

No, I don't think so. I mean there is no directive saying we have to go to a certain place. Basically, we're pulled through this vortex to somewhere and expected to set up a life there, or do whatever we want. We can move if we choose, but where we go isn't always the same as we might have known it before. It's pretty confusing.

Then there was no purpose to my being taken? I am meant to just... keep living, but here?

There is very little sense to this.

That's how it seems to me so far. I haven't been here that long myself, so as of yet... I can't figure out any particular reason.

I know. It sucks.

Are you quite sure we are not political prisoners?

No, I'm not completely sure of anything but I don't know why anyone would want me as a political prisoner. I had no political ties back home.

Not all political prisoners are, by necessity, political persons... that their capture be damaging in some way to their government is usually enough.

Still, I do not feel that this is a guarded place. Surely they would guard prisoners. At least selectively.

This must make itself clear in time. If there is nothing more to know, there is nothing more to know, and that is that. Except for our names.

I am Sorve Harth rem ir Estraven, Lord of Estre. And I thank you for your assistance.

I was a dancer. There's no way my government misses me. I don't think we're prisoners. No one has tried to keep me from doing anything or stop me or... well, anything of the sort.

Wow, that's a mouthful. I'm Teresa Marie Jacoby, but I go by Tess. And you're welcome. I try to help when I can.

It is as long as any name, save for my title... but you may call me Harth. I think it would be silly to be called by my title in a foreign world, where my birth and lands likely mean nothing. Besides... if I may confess something, I have not quite gotten used to it.

I am pleased to meet you, Tess. Will you tell me where you live? Perhaps once I discover my location, I shall make my way towards there.

Used to your title? Was it only recently bestowed upon you?

Right now I live in London. Of course I don't know if I'll stay here but nothing is certain these days.
