Um, hi.  I know this is really quite unconventional, but rather than show up at your doorstep unexpectedly, I figured I'd talk to you through here.

I'm Dr. Spencer Reid, and I'm interested in seeing River in a... um, romantic sense?  She's really amazing, I really like her.  I'm no good at these... Sorry.  Um.

I'd really like to talk to you personally some time.  From what River has told me, the two of you have been through a lot.  Her especially.  If there's anything I can do for either of you, please, don't hesitate to ask.  I would like to get to know you, because you are so important to her.  If it's all right with you, I'd like to sit down this Monday with you, and maybe get some lunch?  I'm on a pretty short leash at work, but I can definitely swing a couple hours to sit down with you in person.  Just let me know.

Hello, Dr. Reid. I actually very much appreciate the note.

Meeting up would be fine. River's spoken very highly of you, and for her to think well of someone means there's something there worthy of thinking well of. If that makes sense. It's nothing personal against you, but she is my sister, and she'll have told you I worry.

Monday would be all right if it's a bit early; I do have another appointment that day.

I think it makes plenty of sense, and I understand that you're only trying to keep her safe. After what has happened, and the obvious um... mental issues she presents, I completely understand your hesitation.

Our team won't be up on the rotation for another three days, unless suddenly, there's a massive crime wave. Weirder things have been known to happen, though. I'll see what I can do to schedule my lunch for earlier than usual. Does about 10 am sound all right for you? I know a place that has really good food, which, again, I take isn't something either of you are very used to? My treat.

Ten sounds fine, thank you. I'm a doctor myself, a surgeon, and I've been trying to find myself a place to work.

Please don't, however, talk about River like a test subject, if you can avoid it.

I hold my doctorates in engineering, mathematics and chemistry, though I'm working on getting my next doctorate in psychology. I'm not going to be a clinical psychologist, I'm a criminal profiler by trade, so I use my knowledge in those fields to get into the minds of serial criminals - usually killers - to see if we can catch them before they strike again.

I wouldn't dream of it, she's so much more than that, and I have a feeling that is a very raw nerve for her? So yes, I try not to. I've been told, however, that I have a way of sucking the life out of all conversation because I'm so um... stiff? So I apologize in advance for that. I also sometimes share more than I should.

Impressive. I can see why she's interested in your company. And criminal profiling is an interesting field, though I know it as far more advanced than I think it is here.

River and I both have some things that are extremely raw nerves, yes. But you don't really have a way of knowing that, not yet. Let's just leave it that I don't have anything personal against you, but she's the only family I have. And I'll meet you at ten tomorrow unless I hear otherwise.

Thanks. Back home and here, it's still a fairly complex process, and I see it as a series of puzzles, a challenge. I like my job. I've been telling her about it, she was shocked that the government HELPS people here.

I'll see you at [address] at ten, then. Good luck with the job search, Dr. Tam.

She would be shocked, definitely. She spent time with me aboard what was in some aspects a military ship; I was a kind of combat medic for a while. And thank you, Dr. Reid, I appreciate it.
