The last time I had a wife, that wasn't a standard practice. Our surnames depended on the names of our fathers. I was Erickson because I was Erick's Son. My first wife was Frida Johansdottir because she was Johan's Daughter. It still works that way in Iceland, actually. And Norway, now that I think of it. It was the Britons who started the tradition of taking the man's name in marriage, I believe. So that their sons would also be Carvers or Smiths, which were, in fact, professions.
