Holmes? Is that you?

How very odd.

This might work. I think it is. Fascinating. Watson are you there? A small typewriter writing to electric paper. This is marvelous. How are you seeing this? Where are you? You should be here you know.

[Still voice poted, Watson's a little slow]

I am here. I am reading the words on this little screen.

I am...it appears to be a hotel room.

My room as well. With another large metal box on a table. And lamps without oils. What is at work here Watson? It looks. Oh dear. Look out the window. Or perhaps don't. I'm not entirely sure.

Holmes, what have you done?

Have you inadvertently transported us to the future? What is that? I do not understand.

If I were to manage time travel, it would hardly be inadvertent, Watson. But no I am afraid I cannot take credit for the marvel. Do push up on the bottom of the electric paper. There are keys below it, like a typewriter. I do not appreciate your tone.

Well, I'll be damned. Did you do that? How did you do that? I realise you're a genius, but truly these things never cease to amaze me.

You probably will be, yes. And it was rather easy, all told, after shrinking the small transcription writer down to fit in the box, and making the electric light to show the words. Honestly, Watson, I could have done it in my sleep.

Yes, but how does it work, Holmes? I dare think you yourself do not even know.

It doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. I had hoped the lady of the world might have some explanation. How disappointing Miss Adler. Do you see the typekeys there at the bottom? Like a typewriter. At least then I don't have to hear the sarcasm aloud.

I don't quite at the moment, but I do see the typekeys, yes. Very funny, Holmes. The newspaper says the date is January the 9th, 2010. That can't be right.

Have you looked outside? There are metal carriages moving without horses. This small device is somehow writing to you, without ink, and you being nowhere in sight. I do believe the date to be only a small part of the greater picture.

That is quite something. I seem to be in some kind of room, a hotel room perhaps. It looks a little like ours, except much smaller. Did you experience the very large swirling vortex of air right before you got here?

I believe I am in a hotel room as well, although not one I recognize. Terribly smaller. Was I feeling so cheap? And I had felt something of that nature, yes, but. I had believed it to be the wine. Did you have the wine as well?

You're always feeling cheap unless it comes to something to drink or your violin, or your experiments. I definitely didn't have the wine, and this time, I know I didn't drug you.

That was to be my next question. I suppose that, at least, can be a comfort. But if not a fantasy, then what is this place? These things? We simply must find one another. Do you see anything resembling an address, on the buildings outside? There are no shingles, that I can see. Only.... lights.

This obviously isn't some mass delusion we're having. I'll leave my room and see if I can find the address. Don't go anywhere until I return.

If we're both running around, we're going to miss each other. Fine. You go find the address of where you are, and I will do the same and then we will find out how far they are apart.

Ah, another proper gentleman or two. Delightful. You've been transported to a new dimension, sirs. Please direct your attention to this [link], but do be warned, it's rather... bright and sunny.

If you've any questions after that, I've been here a couple weeks myself, and I've found it rather easy to adjust. However, from that above correspondence, I assume you're straight out of the industrial era, therefore, may find this world slightly more strange than I.

Questions indeed. Starting with who you are, good sir, and just how are you reading this correspondence? What is that link- how am I to Oh Heaven Above that's bright. Just what does it mean, alternate universe? Is this some sort of... delusion?

[info]hauntedportrait

A delusion to some, perhaps, but I assure you, sir, it is entirely set in reality. Just another one. You... weren't around for the scientific theories about multiple realities not unlike our own, though perhaps Verne wrote something on it...

I sir, am Dorian Gray. And you, I presume, are Detective Holmes. I've heard of you.

Verne, as in Jules Verne? That is science fiction, good sir, not science fact. Theories perhaps based around the principles of truth, but wrapped with enough hearty fantasy to keep them afloat in the public mind. Holmes, indeed- and really? From the Yard, then, or simply from the papers? I'm not sure which really paints the better picture.

Yes, the same author, and while science fiction's operative word is 'fiction', many things our dear old Jules wrote about have become very much reality. In fact, his story about time travel - you've just experienced it.

You are now in the 21st century, Holmes. Welcome to it, in all its debauched and improper glory.

As for how I've come to know your name, well. You were closer with the papers theory than the Yard. Those darling men and I aren't on speaking terms, in a manner of speaking.

The twenty first century? But how is that even possible? And I hardly blame you about the Yard- delightful men, the lot of them, don't get me wrong. If only they could charm themselves up a few real detectives.

[info]hauntedportrait

It's a great deal more complicated than I could properly explain. I may be well read, but I'm no genius. And the Yard hasn't changed much at all in the past century and a half, I'm afraid. They'll always be more about numbers and less about results. But now that you're here, I'm sure they'll be knee-deep in captured felons soon enough.

I do believe the first mystery to solve is where my cohorts and I have found ourselves. Then I can work on cleaning up the Yard's messes for them. If they are even still redeemable, so far on. While I am actually remembering myself, thank you, Mr. Grey. I am certain this will start to make sense. Eventually.

Gray with an A, sir, and you're quite welcome. If you're not unlike a great many others, you've found yourself in London. Many of the streets have never changed, you should be very able to find your way around. If you need any help in finding Mr. Watson and your lady friend, just let me know. I'm used to the changes.

Insofar as saying that there is some sort of... chronological dispute, and I am somehow in the future? Past that, I am afraid, it is a bit of a blur.

Oh, thank heaven. Englishmen! I mean no offense to any of my friends who might read this, but one does rather long for people who Get It, so to speak.

Gentlemen, and is it Miss Adler? My name is Bela Talbot Winchester. Missus. Should you require any sort of orientation to today's London, do not hesitate to ask.

Erm. By the way. I feel compelled to mention that several stories exist here which purport to be tales of your exploits. I confess I'm quite a fan, for better or worse. Still, Mister Holmes, you need not dread a fluttering female should you require my aid. I don't think I've ever fluttered.

Miss Adler is indeed the infuriatingly charming woman in correspondence with myself above, yes. And you, like many others, seem to be. Well, that's interesting, is it not? I do hope they pay royalties, somehow- I am not sure I will be able to work cases, until I get my bearings about me. All of this... industry. It's amazing! It is a pleasure to meet you, Missus Winchester. I do apologize for not being more... eloquent, however I am still working on figuring out just what is afoot.

Not at all, Mr. Holmes. As for royalties, you would have to talk to the heirs of a man called Conan Doyle, who allegedly wrote the stories. But should you require information about the city, I or my husband could likely provide it.
