I am not Oz, though I have known street-conjurers like him.

A golem.... imagine a substance. An object. Many objects. A beach full of sand, or a cup full of water. I can give it life, place an intention into it. I can make a handful of coins in a bag stack themselves into the shape of a man and walk along the street.

Sable frequently uses my talents for dusting her shop. I also have a shop of my own. I can, by fortuitous happenstance, fix any electronic device, no matter how broken.

My world had electricity, but it was not used in such advanced ways as it is here. At least not anymore. Once, I think, my world was about equal with this one, but that ended before my time, and truths are difficult to see now -- of our past, our present, or whatever future is intended for us.

My world is called Bas-Lag. Where do you come from, where everything is dead?

Papa used to tell me about the world before I was born, and he says now this world is like his world used to be, before. He doesn't like to talk about it much.

It was Earth, where we lived. He said the clocks stopped at one seventeen one morning, and within a year fires had destroyed everything on the ridge, and the world was slowly dying.

We ate what we could. We put cardboard in our shoes to make the last longer. We wore our clothes in layers, and we ate what bugs we could find. One time we found an underground bunker, that's what papa called it. There was canned food there, and water too. Mostly we got our water from the rivers, or from the rain. It's not a good way to live, and I don't recommend it.
