An improbable fiction
I've tried reading that website, but honestly, who the hell thought all that blinking was a good idea? To say nothing of the colour scheme. I'm sorry, but I can't tolerate it.

So can anyone tell me if there's an Equity here? Canadian, that is.

Oh? What sort of plays do you enjoy?

Oh, I'll happily watch anything, but I prefer tragedies. And rock operas, but mostly tragedies.

I'm Melpomene. I can probably answer any questions you've got about the place.

I just finished a run of the Scottish Tragedy before arriving here. It was the flagship play of this year's New Burbage Shakespeare festival.

Melpomene--well, with a name like that, I suppose your parents wanted to make sure you loved the theatre.

Always one of my favourites...And he was such a delight to watch while writing it. Oh, it takes me back... I am sure you were absolutely wonderful in it.

And yes... with parents like mine, they tend to expect a lot of their kids. Although they didn't name me after anyone... it means she who sings

He ... you knew Shakespeare?

Are you telling me you're the actual muse Melpomene?

I did indeed... He was a delight. I harbored a bit of a crush... I daresay I'm not the only one here who did.

And yes... that's me. The one and only... Because really, who else would offer their child a name that was such a mouthful? You can call me Mel, if you like. Most do.

I ... fucking hell.

I'm Ellen Fanshaw. Or do you already know that?

I could... but I don't. I rather prefer to let people let me know who they are on their own... seems a bit more polite that way.

It is a pleasure though, Ms. Fanshaw. I hope you're settling in alright?

I suppose I am ... though I only came over with the one change of clothes, and....

Please, call me Ellen.

Ellen then, of course.

Did you not have ID on you, for whomever you replaced? Often, they tend to have what's needed... or at the very least, the means with which to get it.

Yes, but it was for a cosmetologist named Myrtle Groggins, of all things. I showed up in Chicago, and at first I thought I'd been kidnapped, and I demanded to be taken to the Canadian Consulate there, then I met this Mountie who looked just like Geoffrey did about ten years ago, only it turned out they're not related at all. And somehow his fiancée had run into Geoffrey in Luton, of all the godforsaken places to end up, in England, so the Mountie took me there by portkey--and is that really like the Hogwarts thing? Anyway, Geoffrey has a house there, though he's talking about selling it so we can open a new theatre.

Oh... Oh, I see. Well, yes, the portkeys are like Hogwarts... in fact, I do believe it was the kids there that set hem up, though I admit to never having used one myself. Little need, you see. I suppose you could return to Chicago the same way, and get what you needed, if necessary?

A new theatre sounds lovely. But I'm always a fan of such thing. Will it be in England, then, or Canada?

I suppose I could, but honestly, with a name like Myrtle Groggins, I'm expecting her closet to look like the wardrobe for Tobacco Road, or extreme tartwear. And probably no decent push-up bras.

We haven't decided if it'll be in England or Canada. We'll probably spend a few days in the house settling in before putting it on the market. And I suppose we need to find something like a business manager, though any corporate sponsor types who want us to whore ourselves out for management workshops can, to be frank, fuck off.

Oh, yes... I can definitely see the potential problems there.

You'll probably find a lot of support for a theatre if you ask around... there are a lot of people who really support the arts, who get it. A lot are musicians, but even they know what it's like to not want to sell out. Even some budding playwrites, and other authors who could probably do amazing original works.

Would we now? That's interesting. Very interesting. Thank you very much.
