Is it peculiar to miss a place you hated in the first place?

I don't believe so. Where I come from people used to say "you never know what you have until it's gone."

How can you have something, and not know it?

I think it means the value of it. People don't know how much something means to them until they've lost it.

I suppose that does make a particular kind of sense.

Many sayings from my world don't make much sense. For instance, "I'm happy as a clam." How does one know if a clam is happy?

You could just ask it if it's happy, I would think. It seems the polite way of doing it - assumptions can be rather tricky.

You are a very unique person, Miss Alice. In a good way.

Oh, I should hope so. Imagine if there were two of me... how would I ever keep track?

One is more than enough, I think.

No, Miss Alice. We all miss things we didn't exactly like, y'know.

I imagine so. It still seems odd. I hated that place every time I went, and now it seems... well, not so horrid, I suppose.

Everythin' is different when ye look back. I know about that when it comes to things like th' Heights and men like Master Heathcliff.

Your Heights seem a nice place than the hospitals... Although I could be wrong. It appears not everything is quite as it seems.

I've never been t' a hospital in me life, Miss Alice... for all I know, th' Heights might've been worse. They were hardly normal, I can tell ye that.

I would advise avoiding them... they like to poke and prick and shock your head for no good reason at all, save you do not agree with them about certain things.

Ought I also avoid the Heights?

I'll keep that advice in mind. Hareton Earnshaw bows to no man, not even in a hospital.

Th' Heights ain't so bad, providin' you can stand the moors. Things used to be worse before Miss Cathy came along and changed things about... o' course, that was back in my time. It's probably changed again now.

You've not gone back?

I keep meanin' to, but it's... difficult, I guess. Bein' trapped in the centre o' London means the moors are just like some distant dream.

Difficult logistically, or difficult because you're not sure what you'll find is what you're looking for?

I do apologize if I'm prying.

Bit o' both, really. It's been over two-hundred years since I was last there, after all...

This is hardly pryin', Miss Alice.

I imagine it's changed at least a bit. Everything else has. Assuming it was ever the same at all here, I suppose.

I wonder if it's better to know, or simply remember? There's a few places I've the same feelings on.

And I am pleased to know it's not - one never can tell these days. People hardly make much sense like they ought, it seems.
