That was the first good night's sleep I've gotten in weeks. It does absolute wonders.

Your kidneys have finished the maturation process and are ready for transplant. From here on, the process is no different than a normal transplant, save that you do not need to worry about rejection. I have medical personnel that can perform the transplant, or I can have the kidneys airlifted to County, if you'd prefer to have familiarity with your surgeons.

I've been away a few years.

Your people have done this much, they can finish it.

...It is a sad commentary on the world we are living in that I have to ask if you meant that as a figure of speech or a literal statement.

Of course. We can perform the transplant as early as tomorrow, if you would like.

It was literal. Aside from hopping the universe train, I spent several years working in Africa, and there's almost no one left at my hospital that I would know.

Tomorrow wouldn't be soon enough. Just tell me where and when to be there.

Ah, no, I thought you meant you'd spent several years away since the last time we spoke. I imagine something like that would be possible in this world.

Excellent. 11:30am?

Oh, right. That's possibly possible, here. I think.

11:30. I will be there.

Very possible. Though things like that are rarely linked with pleasant interludes.

I assure you my staff is very capable. You are in good hands, Dr. Carter.

I'm counting on that, Mr Veidt. I'll see you first thing tomorrow.

What else is a wonder is how you can sleep at all.

Is there something in particular you wanted? I can't imagine you simply wanted to say hello.

But maybe I did. Seems like it's been a lifetime since I've seen you, after all.

Very clever.

I'm a bit busy now, Blake. If there is something you actually wanted to discuss, I would be happy to do so. Otherwise I have more important things to do.

Oh yeah? I thought you'd like that.

I know how it goes-places to go, people to kill. Don't let me keep you, Veidt.

It made me grin, yes.

People to heal, actually. You must be confusing my schedule with yours. What is it today, reporters or pregnant women?

Neither. I was thinking sociopath brainiacs, actually.

You're welcome to try. You'd do well to remember how it turned out last time we fought. I've no particular desire to kill anyone, but I will defend myself should it become necessary.

[info]gothispunchline

That was a fair one, too, what with me in my bathrobe in the middle of the night. And for a man with no desire to kill anyone, you sure do a lot of it. Self punishment? I always knew you were a masochist, Veidt.

Go and heal your sick, and hope that you don't turn your back on the shadows at the wrong time. I'll leave you be for now.

Masochism? That was remorse. I know you've no concept of the word, but I strongly suggest you look it up. It might just do you some good.

You don't frighten me, Blake. If I am to die for what I have done, it will be no less than what I deserve. I've accepted that, but I do not fear it.

I prefer to think of it as being a human being. Something I'm sure a deranged nihilist would know nothing about.

Do whatever you'd like, Blake.

[info]gothispunchline

I don't think you quite get the idea of what being human is, Veidt. Someday you will, and you'll find out you never dirtied your hands with it.

I will.

[info]35minutesago

Based on the example you've set? Being human is no different than being an animal. I choose to believe humanity can be more than that.

It is exactly that sort of mindset that put our world on its steady course towards doomsday.

The true irony here, Blake? All those years ago, when you burned Gardner's map, you were right. Society had had fallen too far for a group of people in garish costumes to save it. Only two things could have saved it: Jon, and humanity itself. Jon wouldn't, so humanity had to. And they did, by the way.

And I'm sure you are pleased as punch that you got to be the one who nudged them on along, Veidt. Humanity nothing-they survived like cockroaches after a blast, that's all. I'm sure the dead sing your praises in Hell.

No one else would. I've never claimed it was a good deed, only a necessary one.

They not only survived, they thrived. The alien may have been a fake, but it gave them a threat to unite against.

I'm prepared to answer for my sins, Blake.
