Law enforcement's right to deadly force has never sat well with me. Shoot first, ask questions later doesn't work so well when they're dead.

You can't ask questions if YOU'RE dead, either. Aim for an extremity, preferably the one holding the gun.

Or any extremity, really. Something non-vital. Because most people have never been shot before, and the shock of it happening? Will make them drop whatever they're holding and give you time to rush them while they cry like a baby.

I've found, miss, that depends entirely on whom one is shooting at, and what questions need answers.

Or whether or not you'd like to see someone punished for their crime, or die like a coward.

Dead's dead, and that's always seemed punishment enough to me.

Eventually, sure. But remorse only comes from suffering, it's the only way you learn. What good's justice if nobody learns?

In my experience, people don't learn, you see. They just keep coming up with new and different schemes to do the same old things.

And in my experience, somebody can always be made to learn. You just have to find the right way to be persuasive.

A good thing, then, that I was never asked to rehabilitate anyone I was sent after. I suppose I don't have the temperament for it.

Neither do I, normally. But there are always exceptions. Although technically, I'm supposed to leave the rehabilitation up to the penal system.

That tends not to be the ultimate destination of most of the fellows I meet.

I can't say I'm surprised to hear that.

We all have our duties to Queen and Country.

I suppose you're right, although she's not my queen, even if this is her country.

And yours would include...?

I'm sorry, I believe I've neglected to introduce myself. The name is Bond. James Bond.

A pleasure, Mr. Bond. I'm Detective Inspector Herald - Athena, if you like. Recently arrived from the States.

Athena. The pleasure is all mine. What expatriated you?

The need for a change of career and scenery. I'd always loved London, so it seemed a natural choice.

Can I ask just exactly what it is you do for Queen and Country, or would you have to kill me if I knew?

I know the feeling.

Of course. I'm a senior analyst with MI6.

"Senior analyst", huh? I had a hunch.

It is a really bloodless euphemism, isn't it?

Only when prefaced by talk of going after people. You might want to keep an eye on that next time. But don't worry, you're not the only analyst I know, and I know enough to leave it at that.

Oh, not me. An old friend of mine, a roommate from college. I'm just your run-of-the-mill detective.

Yes, an American. Maybe you've run into her during your travels. Brown hair, ability to kill with her pinky, answers to "Shannon" (usually).
