I apparently have a cooking show. That's really weird. I was never much for cooking all the time, unless it involved cheese, before I started working for Ned. But apparently I have this show about semi-homemade food. I prefer the homemade kind without the 'semi-', but oh well. It will probably be fun. It's just weird to think I just replaced someone. Like...poof! I'm here. and poof! They're not. A little too familiar, really.

Has anyone ever thought about where the people we "replace" go? Because it's really kind of sad when you think about it. I guess I just feel a little guilty, living this woman's life.

I can imagine the man I replaced- and more importantly, the peopl eI left behind- being thoroughly amused about where he ended up. That is, assuming he really did get transported into my existence, like they say.

But you're doing alright, Chuck?

That would be strange...Ned would positively freak out at someone replacing me. I'm not entirely sure if that would be because he would miss me or because he hates change. Probably both. But maybe this woman would be nice and he'd be able to touch her so really it might be better for him in the long run.

I'm alright, yes, thank you for asking. How was your Christmas, John?

And I realize I asked that question without even making sure you celebrate Christmas, which is just silly. I mean, I'm Jewish, so I really shouldn't assume everyone here conforms to Christian traditions.

It's alright, I know how hard it is to get away from. I don't celebrate, but I did manage to find a friend of mine here, have a drink with him. It was... nice.

How were your holidays? I hope you were at least able to celebrate somewhat.

Well, that's good at least. I'm glad you have a friend here.

I didn't really, but that's all right. I was mostly just getting settled. Besides, I hardly know anyone here, and this season's more about togetherness, so celebrating alone is a little depressing.

I'll have another soon, I'd bet. My brother really can't stay away long.

That's a shame, Chuck. It has to be lonely. If you decide you need a celebration, I'm sure you could just ask. No one would ever turn down a party with a beautiful woman.

Assuming, of course, that is what happens. It's possible that when we arrive, we don't fall into a body so much as fall into a space, and the universe creates a history for us and places it in people's minds. Since the past is largely dependent on what people remember happening, if everyone remembers false information, then that's effectively what happened. That would explain why these people don't come back when we disappear again: they were never there to begin with, and any observational and physical evidence thereof is a sort of shared dream.

That's true. I guess it's entirely possible that the people we supposedly replace never existed, so we're not actually taking anyone's place. It's a lot to think about. I sort of hope that's how it is, because it seems nicer than possibly negating someone's existence.
