Sam, and even Charlie, had done a pretty good job of making sure Eva had a happy childhood. She never missed the fact that she had no parents - the only family she ever needed were what she had, and she was happy with them. And even when she started helping with surveillance and getting into other training, Sam and Charlie provided the support she needed to deal with the scary things she saw or heard. Sam also did a pretty good job of protecting her from it before he was taken. It seems, specifically, it was the active rebels who had few reasons to smile, so that the rest of their ilk could.
Eva didn't acknowledge his words until he actually bumped her with his shoulder. She tried to keep her eyes on the screen and ignore Samir, but a small smile tugged at her lips before she could school her face. "Don't let him catch you dozing off," she replied, taking another sip of her coffee so she wouldn't smile again.
There was another pause before she continued. "Samir, it's only a couple of more hours. What if something happened? You'd regret sending me home." Not that she had to be there for them to handle an emergency, but one person could make a difference when it was all hands on deck. Besides, he was pushing her now, and she was not going to back down. Instead, she suddenly stood and pushed the chair out of the way so she could stand at her station instead of sit. Less likely to fall asleep that way. Of course, standing didn't do a heck of a lot for her height considering how small she was anyway.
