The teasing about his being handsome is probably what got the pencils scattering all over the place, but the small flush of embarrassment only grew darker when she realized what he said, as she was trying to pick up her mess, and he was bending to help her. There was a long pause, as she seemed to ignore his comment, and she didn't answer until she had all her things again.
"You didn't," she said. Well, he had. But her scattering things all over the place hadn't been because of that. There had been too much of a delay for it to have been caused by that. But as soon as she said it, she regretted it, because now she just looked like a klutz. She opened her mouth as if to say something else, and then slowly closed it. She was better off not. She didn't sound completely idiotic just yet. She just tucked some hair behind her ear and nervously fiddled with a pencil before casting a pained look up at him.
