As doubtful as he was about the sincerity of the story she was telling him, the decent man he'd been raised to be won out. On the off chance that she was opening up to him, despite their normally strained relationship, he couldn't shut her down. If she was just pulling his leg - which he really wasn't sure about, he knew she was a skilled liar when it suited her - he was almost certainly making a fool of himself.
But on the (very) off chance that she was being genuine, well.. that was surely worth the price of looking foolish. Plus, it wasn't like he actually thought her opinion of him was very high as it were. Didn't exactly take a genius to realize he wasn't her favorite person, with the avoiding and minimal conversations. Playing into her hand now couldn't really cause any more damage.
"Nobody here's making a big deal out of anything." It was a big deal, but blowing it out of proportions would do more harm then it could possibly do any good. So he leaned back against the sink, not paying any mind to the wet edge soaking through his shirt. Listening as she spoke, doing his best to keep his face impassive since he didn't think she would appreciate sympathy anymore then she would judgement. "Well I'm always around to listen anytime you feel like spilling to somebody." Because he did actually believe that she wouldn't want to tell Travis or Deb, and he could even believe that she wouldn't include Wyatt for fear of roping him in (again, if this was the truth).
"That is an accomplishment," he agreed. "You're made of tougher stuff then most, you'll pull through. In the meant time, don't go kicking yourself for takin' one step backwards when you've taken so many forward before that." Because if she was being genuine, she had fought just as hard (maybe harder, since she did it more or less on her own) as Wyatt to get and stay clean. One slip up didn't take away from that, even if it had been foolish to head down that road again.
