Morning sunlight filtered through the canopy of trees above them. Warmth on her face roused her from sleep. Lydia cracked open one eye, cringing and making a noise in her throat when a sharp ray of light blinded her. She shifted her legs, trying to straighten them, to stretch them, but couldn’t move too much. How long had she managed to sleep? Judging from the heaviness of her eyelids, not long. Mornings were usually her favorite part of the day, but right now… it was just a reminder of how long she’d been tied up in this cage. How long they had been tied up in the cage. Wriggling her wrists, she hissed as the ropes dug into raw skin. Her arms were stiff from being restrained so long in one position above her head. With some effort (her neck was stiff, as well), Lydia turned her head to look in Bea’s direction. Yet her gaze went past Bea, to the empty place in the cage, which had been occupied the last time she’d opened her eyes. Her eyes went back to her companion. She had to clear her throat before she could speak. “Where’d that guy go?” Although she had a gut feeling she already knew the answer. Or, rather, her nose was telling her the answer. A fire was burning in the center of the camp. On a spit in the middle of the blade was a hefty chunk of meat, being spun with purpose by one of the cannibals. She tried to shift so that she could stretch, but not much movement was achieved. “Did I miss much?” She asked. How long had she been asleep? She hadn’t even meant to close her eyes long, but she was so exhausted, her body tired enough that even fear couldn’t keep her awake. |
