Could that be considered having a sense of humor about things, however dark the joke was? Bea snorted, miming one of those airline wands. “Think I’d get myself fucking fired from that shit before I made it a week though.” The security she could do because no one expected her to be cheery or polite, she just had to be efficient. It was probably better for everyone that she wasn’t a medic of any kind; her bedside manner wouldn’t have been built for the kind of crisis they were living in. “Bad enough dealing with these people, let alone families and amped up travelers.” Kind of amusing to watch some of looters get uppity about having to be checked over though. It brought some variety to the monotony of the routine, and helped her ignore the fact that she was invading people’s space.
There just wasn’t any better way to do it that she could think of. It would be too easy to hide an injury, like Mrs. Suggs had.
“I wouldn’t say we’re stuck with a bunch of geniuses,” she replied with a shrug. “I came and went whenever the hell I wanted without anyone bothering me. They probably should have, but people were too fucking wrapped up in their own shit to care about possible danger.” The security people did what they could, but it had been pretty lax. “Or they were too damn comfortable.”
If she had to guess there were probably some people now that wished they’d been paying better attention. Maybe. Her opinion of the general population still wasn’t that high. Their handling of the Suggs incident didn’t help change her mind.
“There’s probably a better way to do quarantine too.” Because it seemed safe to air that opinion between just the two of them. Having all of the possible zombie victims in one place just didn’t make sense to her, since Bea was pretty sure not all of them were going to go zombie. So it meant they were still putting people at risk in that environment and they had to watch the whole group that much more closely, make sure they handled if anyone did turn quickly before they could take a chunk out of someone else. She didn’t want that job personally. Didn’t want it on her head if she wasn’t fast enough. “The least they could have done was bother to check who was injured in the chaos and who actually thought they had a zombie run-in.”
It was only after the fact that she remembered that the other woman had a sister in there. “Fuck. You probably don’t want to be talking about quarantine, my fucking bad.”
