Zombie population was down, that was really the only upside to the hotel burning. Well, that and watching the last of her biological father's legacy literally burn to the ground, but that was a pretty bitter thought and she had added that to her long list of things to work on not sucking so much about. Some days it felt like said list was just a document of all the ways she failed at functioning as a basic human, others it felt like an accomplishment at working past the damage uncaring parents had left behind (admittedly a small one, but hey, progress was progress). Tonight wasn't about that, though. Tonight was about joining their neighbors for a bonfire. The theory seemed to be that it was a sort of celebration for the holiday the American's of the group were missing out the following night, but mostly it just seemed like an excuse to not hide out in their RVs for a few hours and attempt to enjoy one another's company when it wasn't totally stifling outside. The group had even cooked dinner together earlier in the night, before the sun had finally set and the air had cooled enough that starting up an actual bonfire hadn't felt like they were sitting in an oven. It was too warm to sit right by the fire, at least in her opinion, so Deb had settled in a patch of grass a little further out. Close enough to watch the others, to even join in on the conversation here and there, but far enough that she could get lost in her thoughts instead too. On the opposite side of the fire her former boss was being regaled by the tale of what Lily and Booga had done that day - to Teddy's credit, if he was putout about the eight year old having occupied the seat next to him it didn't show on his face at all. The whole scene brought an amused smile to her face, which stayed in place when she lifted her gaze toward the night sky. Blue eyes seeking out any of the shapes Travis occasionally attempted to teach her. |
