Deb nodded, not far off from having just thought the same thing. But they'd already had this conversation and discussed the pros and cons, so she shifted into gear rather than going over all the same points. There were things and kids to gather up, much more important.
Shoulder bumps were easier than trying to reassure the youngest things were fine when they clearly weren't. At least this was fairly controlled chaos, making it fractionally less scary all on its own. And Lydia appeared quickly, that also helped.
"Sounds like a plan. Ready kid?" The question was asked as she hiked Lily higher on her back now that her hands were free and met with a quick nod and limbs tightening their grip on her. A beat to let her settle, then Deb stepped in front and started weaving them toward the staircase. Floors were set up pretty much the same, so even if she hadn't spent a lot of time on this particular one, the layout was easy to remember. Someone shoved past them, scrambling back toward their own room for their possessions. Rude, but even if it'd been worth shouting about they were halfway down the hall already.
Holding the door open, she waited until the other three were through to start down the steps. "Stairwell's smoke free," so far, "so should be able to take it down to the emergency exit and avoid most of the crowd." There were only a couple people already in the stairs, winding their way down too. Maybe to leave, maybe to try and help. They were still pretty far from the second floor though, which explained why she couldn't see the smoke starting to seep past the door.
