She cracked the rifle against the skull of the nearest cannibal, bone and metal combining to make a sickening and painful sound. It did the job. The man released his grip on Cassidy’s ankle, hand shooting up to press over the gusher of blood that was once a perfectly healthy eye socket. Carly felt bile in the back of her throat. Just minutes ago they’d been having a calm dinner in her hut, the constant rush of waves outside adding to the peaceful ambiance of the evening. Now the beach huts were under attack by man-eating humans. The hastily constructed barricade had done nothing to keep the intruders out of Carly’s hut. Two men were attacking them, but how long until more converged? How long before they were dragged away to become the next meal, or killed on the spot? Her eyes darted to the back exit, which led straight out into the ocean. She wasn’t a strong swimmer, never had been and wasn’t confident her rising panic would rouse any latent instinct. The most it had done so far was force her to strike a man in the head. He was getting up. Their window of opportunity for escape was once again closing. Carly shot a glance at Cassidy. A sniper rifle wasn’t the most useful gun to use in close-quarters. She’d never tried shooting something up close with it before. It was more deadly than Cassidy’s bat, which put in her mind that she needed to at least try aiming the long gun at their attackers. If her ex-girlfriend got killed because all Carly did was stand there and watch helplessly, she would never be able to forgive herself. She swung the gun around to aim, preparing to shoot. One of the men knocked it out of her hand without much effort. |
