WHO: Miah & Renata
WHEN: [Flashback] April 17th, 2014; mid-day
WHERE: The beach, resort
WHAT: One of those weird moments when your past finds you where you least expect it
CHALLENGE: #7, what if
Beaches had a siren call for Renata, no matter what else she was doing in a day she would somehow end up back on the sand at some point. Her tan was starting to darken since she’d been on Kamong, something she hadn’t really had since she left Australia. The beaches in the Bay Area weren’t built for sunbathing, not like the ones she’d grown up with or the resort beach. They were perfect.
The rest of her mates were god only knew where, causing trouble probably (maybe sleeping). Except for Christien, she knew at least he wouldn’t call her from the police station to get bail money. And Mason was working, otherwise she would have gotten him to go surfing with her. The waves were killer around Kamong, some of the best that she’d seen. The surf instructors for the resort were less impressive; bunch of wankers with god complexes. Except for the blonde chick, she seemed okay. But Ren just couldn’t run the risk of having to deal with any of the others.
She was almost asleep on her towel -bad idea, she knew- when a racket about twenty feet from her broke out. Some volleyball game. It was enough to get her to lift her head in interest and push her sunglasses down her nose to peak over the tinted lenses. Looked like college kids, definitely weren’t her set of rowdies. Moments from settling back down, someone off to the left of the game caught her eye and made her blink a couple of times in disbelief. Her brain must have been sunbaked, she was seeing things.
Renata had just about convinced herself of that fact when the volleyball thunked near her feet and one of the college kids hollered at her to bring it back. She paused to consider for a long stretch of time before she hopped up from her spot and brought the offending ball back over.
“Be more careful, yeah?” Renata told them and used the proximity to the person she thought she recognized to sneak another look. Not a sunbaked brain mirage, it was definitely who she thought it was. Bloody hell.
