Wyatt’s birthday had come and gone a couple days before without a lot of fanfare, the way he liked it. There were bigger milestones in his life than just living through another year. Things he’d rather remember than getting older. So having to spend it on the island hadn’t bothered him at all. It had just been a day. He was lucky enough that nobody went out of their way to do anything big for him either, so he hadn’t had to grimace through it. Even more than surviving through another year was the fact that the weather was starting to get really decent again too. Almost too warm to be holed up in the marina workshop for hours on end without the advantage of an air conditioner to cut through the humidity. The beach was nicer, with a breeze coming off the water, so it hadn’t taken a lot before he thought to suggest to Kendall they hit the sand for a while. The frisbee he had picked up from the lounge had mostly been a joke to begin with, but once their feet had hit the edge of the beach he realized it probably wouldn’t be that bad of an idea. Even if he hadn’t thrown a frisbee in years probably. Couldn’t be that hard to re-learn, like riding a bicycle or whatever. There wasn’t anyone in sight either, so if he did make an idiot of himself he only had Ken as a witness. He was trying to get better about his hermitting ways, but had started developing an uneasy feeling whenever him and Ken were in what could be considered a public place. Like people -and by people he really meant Deb- could tell there was something more going on just by looking at the two of them. He still hadn’t breathed a word, and after four months it still felt complicated. Or maybe complicated wasn’t the right word, he just wasn’t real sure what the hell he was doing, or what he was supposed to be doing. Or what they were really. “Hey, I’ll make a deal with you,” he started and leveled a sly smile at Kendall, “If this thing gets stuck on the guard tower I’ll retrieve it. If it goes in the water you have to.” Wyatt turned himself so he was facing her completely and walked backwards as they made it further down the beach. “Think water temps up to fifty, so you should be fine.” |
