She knew the locks were shoddy, but hadn’t expected them to be that bad. Reaching for a gun wasn’t natural; she always wore it on her hip, always had it ready in case she needed it while out and about. No more than a handful of situations had called for actually using it - or rather, threatening to use it. Blood pounded in her ears, nerves spiking. Before even reaching the door to her room, Rosana had noticed it was open, saw the flash of white wall and a faint shadow moving within. Someone had broken in. The wisest thing to do would have been to turn and run, let whoever was in there take whatever they wanted. Rosana was not a fighter, was not physically coordinated enough to take down an assailant. The kids were at their lessons, safe with their nanny and tutor. Thankfully. If the intruder had broken into the room while they were there, Rosana wouldn’t have hesitated in barging in with the gun. But she was alone. All of their belongings were in that space. With no one else around to fight for what they had, that left it up to her. So, with a shaking hand, she stepped up to the door and turned her head to get a better listen at what was going on inside. Rosana held the gun up in what she hoped was the correct manner - unbeknownst to her, the safety was on - and pushed the door open. Her mouth gave a cynical turn and she rolled her eyes when she saw who was inside. “What the hell are you doing here?” |
