February’s flood had spared quite a few of the crops. Luckily the ground forming the repurposed pasture was uneven in patches, raising some of the crop rows high enough that they’d been out of the worst of the pooling water. There was nothing to be done about the rest. The seeds from the new growth would have to suffice. Harvest would be delayed, which wasn’t ideal given the trouble the hunters had been reporting when they returned with empty hands. Carly and the others had to wait weeks following the heavy rain in order for the ground to dry out enough to begin replanting. It was delayed even longer when Peyton had to have a stay in quarantine. Carly visited as often as she could, as much to keep her friend occupied as for her own peace of mind to see the woman alive and breathing. Before she knew it, April was here. Replanting needed to happen soon or else the horses and other farm animals would deplete their food storages and start going hungry. Carly dug into the soft earth with a trowel, making a hole large enough to make a nest for the next wheat sapling. The morning air was cool, contrasting the warmth of the sun on the back of her neck. Her hair was tied in a tight bun on top of her head, up and out of the way. Around her, the small group did the same, digging holes and filling them with saplings. A few others kept an eye on the perimeter, keeping any infected away. She filled in the dirt around the wheat plant and stood up to give her back a break and let the blood flow return to her legs. She stood stamping lightly in place to wake up a tingly foot. They’d only been at this for a short time and had already made quite a bit of progress. |
