WHO: Maddie and Indy
WHERE: Harbor/fish market; pirate camp
WHEN: April 1, 2015; evening
WHAT: Lone pirates lose the rest of their camp and try to decide what to do next.
It was a grim brand of irony to lose the last members of their group on April Fools Day. Maddie snipped off another piece of hair and watched the auburn locks fall into the sink. Too long had passed since she’d had a proper haircut. Tonight wasn’t the most appropriate night for it either, but that made no difference. She needed to do this now, needed to delay processing what had happened just a few short hours ago. Snip, snip. More hair flew free. She combed her fingers through what was left, using the scissors here and there to even out the short length. Cathartic in a way, almost like removing pieces of her own body, minus any bloodshed. There had been too much of that today. The reflection in the mirror gnashed its teeth. Maddie rested her hands on the sink and clenched the scissors in her fist, fighting down the urge to cut away any more hair. It was already an inch shorter than she was used to. Blowing out a breath, she tossed the scissors in the sink, leaving it and the hair as she went back outside to join Indy. An orange and yellow sky greeted her, peeking over the horizon like a sleepy eye struggling to stay open. She put her sunglasses in place, all the better to block out the light and hide her red-rimmed eyes, and stepped off the boat onto the dock. Soon it would be night and she was all too ready to let the darkness hide her completely. Four bodies covered in sheets were lined on the grassy bank at the end of the harbor. Four more bodies for the little spit of land they’d designated as a cemetery. They never burned their dead. It was disrespectful to the people they knew, the ones who’d survived alongside them, helped keep their camp safe. They deserved better than being set on fire. Now their numbers were down to two. She picked up a shovel from the dock and started walking toward the area to get digging. Didn’t even bother looking around for Indy. |
