The last two months had been rough, they'd burned through more supplies then they usually did. Couldn't be avoided, but it was worrisome. Most things weren't that big of a deal, they could make do with what they had left until another supply drop came (or worry about it later, if the drops finally stopped). Medical supplies though warranted a need to be concerned with that was only rivaled by their need for food. Food they had - hunting parties were still able to go out and find game, fishing groups still managed to bring back some decent catches. Medical supplies though, those were harder to come by. They had more information now, so collecting plants for the medical team was easier then it had been before. Plants still weren't Logan's thing though, so that aspect of the trip was left in Carly's capable hands. She was just along to keep her cousin safe. Unfortunately, about half way into the trip things had taken an unexpected turn. They'd barely seen any of the undead creeps the whole day - a couple grouped together through out and what had sounded like a runner chasing something else, that'd been it. Then they'd nearly walked right into a whole cluster of slow ones, only to get surprised by a runner avoiding them. Shooting him hadn't been an option, given their proximity to the group, and the tussle to take the thing down quietly had ended with Logan and the zombie sliding down the small cliff. She'd killed it, but twisted her ankle in the process. The duo's trouble hadn't stopped there though. Logan was stubbornly refusing to use Carly as a temporary crutch as they made their way along the bank, which would have been fine if the day had been done throwing curve balls at them. Instead a weird noise just along the treeline had indicated they had incoming company and introduced them to a whole new nightmare - the bloater zombie. The waterlogged body didn't move any faster then the normal zombies that were clustered around it, but neither of the girls had wanted to take it on when it was only a few feet away. Moving slow as she was, hiding out had seemed like their best option. Logan regretted the choice almost instantly when they'd ended up in a small cave who's opening was just along the edge of the river. The river line still high from the previous month's flooding had resulted in a solid two inches of water along the cave floor. It'd had her gritting her teeth, but she'd kept moving. If nothing else, the rush of water right outside the mouth of the cave should drown out any noise they made and cover up their scent. And they didn't really have any other options for the time being. They'd been hiding out for a short while when Logan had slid down to the floor, figuring if they were going to be standing around she may as well rest her ankle. Eventually they were going to have to make a run for it if the zombies didn't wander off on their own. The constant sound of the river flowing was rubbing her the wrong way in the meantime though, but she was trying to ignore it by gritting her teeth and tentatively rolling her ankle every few seconds instead. Any other injury she could have simply pushed through until they were back at the hotel, but she could barely manage to put her full weight on the ankle without her entire leg buckling. The whole thing was pissing her off, actually. More so when the sound of the overstuffed zombie filtered in above the noise of the river. "Can you still see the big guy?" She asked, rolling her head back so she was staring up at the cave ceiling. |
