On the list of places that he could’ve gone to get some space for himself, the top of a guard tower on the beach probably wouldn’t be the first place anyone would look for him. But it hadn’t been the hard to get up there, and the angle was just right that it made sitting just back from the edge a piece of cake. Judah had kept away from the beach for weeks after he’d washed up on shore. Too many negatives were attached to the sand and the water to enjoy the space. But after awhile it was too stupid to not face the strip of land, especially when it was one of the easiest places to find some quiet. The therapist he’d talked to while he was in and then shortly after he got out would tell him that he was being an adult and bettering himself for working through his issues; he could even hear it in her voice. But he hadn’t come out to the tower to do any deep soul searching, just needed to work through a few things before he could move on. He had made it through, not just being shipwrecked but the storms that followed on the island that seemed to want to swallow the island up again. Leaning back on his elbows he glanced down over the sand, surprised when he caught a flash of something bright just to the left of him. He shifted around on the edge of the roof until he was half hanging over it and closer to the person that had appeared. “Going for a swim?” he called down, squinting before he registered that it was a pretty redhead. “Might want to watch out for zombies lurking down there.” He had aborted a quip that could have easily had him coming off like a jerk in favor of a tamer statement. |
