Wyatt broke into a full on smile at the threat. “You wouldn't, it’d be a bad example for your kid.” He leaned forward another inch, but relaxed back into his previous stance before she could actually take an action. He wouldn’t have really put it past her to not try to break a couple of his fingers if he really made an honest attempt to dirty her up.
“You don’t think I’ve got a line of women still hung up on me?” He went back to worrying at his thumb. “You’re the one always saying I got a pretty face, I got charm to match that to.” It wasn’t a secret that Deb didn’t usually want to know half of the things he got up to. He probably could have had the same conversation with Kendall and gotten a different response. Well, maybe not now. They both had histories, that wasn’t the issue, but bringing them up now would feel strange. He didn’t really know the right things to do in whatever they were in. “You are meaner’n me, dunno how you still got people around you, D.”
Wyatt’s side of the conversation wasn’t so much conversation as strategic head nods and ‘uh huhs’ as he tried to keep up with the line of words Lily was rattling off. “Your ma’s right, Hawke will wanna hear all about what you and Booga,” he faltered over the name, raising his eyebrows at Deb over Lily’s head, “got up to.” He hadn’t had animals growing up, hadn’t ever wanted them so even Lily’s enthusiasm for her dog was alien, but kind of cute in that kid way.
Both his hands went up in surrender when Deb turned on him. “Wasn’t hiding behind your kid,” he tried for innocent and fell short by a mile. “You would of called me f--rude if I didn’t listen to her.” Listening to kids was easy, and no way was he going to admit straight off he was ducking out of putting himself in hot water potentially. “Ain’t like I got anything to hide.” Odds of Deb actually asking about his love life were slim, he thought.
“But I promise if I get into old habits I’ll work it so that Jere has to do the cleanup,” he assured her with a smirk. “Since you’re all busy with Lily and Trav.”
