It had gone beyond raining to full on pouring over the past couple days and showed no signs of letting up. It was looking bad even by the standards of someone who had been through more then a handful of Kamong's rainy seasons and had dealt with a couple decent floods before. Seemed like this storm had every intention of being the worst the island had seen in ages, but maybe she was just being especially pessimistic. The water level was rising, but it wasn't even to the point that required actual panic yet. Not that you would know that from the way some of the more sheltered survivors were acting, like a little rain was the end of the world. Which meant they were staying inside, where it was warm and dry, instead of helping prepare for when the water levels did decide to get higher. Not that there was a ton they could really do; certain areas were just going to flood, that was the end of the story. It still pissed her off that she was getting drenched and they were just sitting on their asses though. What they could do, and what she was focused on at the moment, was dig trenches in the other areas. Like around the pastures, to try and keep the water level from completely destroying the crops. They'd still loose some of them, just from the rainfall over watering the fields, but as long as it only rained a few days even that loss should be manageable. Digging said trenches was an absolute bitch though. The project had been started early yesterday, when it had become apparent the rain wasn't stopping, but digging by hand was slow work. Even with the ground being soft from the water it had already absorbed, there were still a couple trenches to finish up now. Even the hard labor of the job might not have been quite so irritating if she could just keep her hair from plastering itself against her face. But she kept digging, because it needed to get done. And maybe a little because if she didn't stop then she couldn't noticed the water rushing around her feet and the sour feeling it left in her stomach. She glanced up when someone blocked the rain from whipping against her for a brief second. |
