The drains built into the floor of the greenhouse weren’t built to prevent mass flooding. Seasoned staff had warned her of the rainy season and potential for disaster, but had also told her what to do if the water began to rise at an alarming rate. Like all things, that had been a year ago, before normal staff procedures were thrown out the window. Carly had done all she could for now, to keep the plants in the greenhouses safe from drowning. The water wasn’t yet high enough to cause a panic, although it had been a constant worry in her mind ever since the storm began two days ago… and showed no sign of stopping. Because it was a food source, she expected more volunteers to want to help keep the water at bay, or assist in moving some of the plant pots to higher ground. Barely a handful of extra people bothered to show up. Put in a situation facing a natural disaster, human nature seemed to decide that only human comfort was important. Sloshing through the muck in her Wellies (now she was glad she hadn’t chucked the boots when she’d been teased for having them in her wardrobe), she followed the path to the stables. Huge puddles pooled in the trail, forcing her to circumvent more than she would’ve liked. If she was having difficulties keeping the greenhouse in order, what sort of luck was Peyton having with the animals? Louder than normal commotion came from the building long before she even reached the entrance. Water gathered in a muddy moat, pressing against the wood. She pulled the door open without knocking and stepped inside. “Hello? It’s Carly.” Pushing her hood off her head, Carly craned her neck to try and locate whoever was in here. Peyton wouldn’t leave the animals in distress. |
