It figured. A day they decide to go to the amusement park, because the weather was mild enough, would be the day that something went wrong. Never mind the fact that Maddie and a couple other friends had braved the zombie-infested beach to get to this part of the resort for a bit of fun before today. That day had been too hot to sit on the metal rides. Today the sky had been cloudy, but thus far the only storm Maddie had seen while on the island had been a brief warm shower on the third day of vacation. It couldn’t be any worse than the wind storms back home, right? As long as they were back at the huts before the worst of the storm hit. Frankly, even if it was pouring rain, Maddie probably would’ve insisted that it was fine to hang out on the fairgrounds while the storm was going on. It was no more dangerous than being in huts that could flood. She and Ryder were on the Ferris wheel when the first peels of thunder started. Lightning cut jagged shapes across the sky, but it wasn’t close to the ground. Not dangerous enough to worry about. Not that she was paying much attention to the weather. The fences around the fairgrounds were surprisingly intact. Except for the gates, but most of the zombies weren’t smart enough to use the gates. The few that were still weren’t much to be worried about. They weren't agile enough to get on the Ferris wheel while it was moving. Maddie considered it a stroke of genius that they’d thought to unhook the wires on the ride that controlled the loud music. That definitely would’ve brought a horde down upon them. “Maybe we should signal to Bonnie to stop the ride for us,” she suggested, once she realized how quickly the storm was picking up. Their friend Bonnie had stayed down below, a fear of heights making her the perfect nominee for stopping the ride when Maddie and Ryder had had their fill of excitement for the day. Lightning struck at the trees along the outer edge of the fairgrounds, pulling an involuntary squeak of surprise from Maddie’s throat. It was getting rough, fast. |
