Kamong in the morning, even with the rainier weather was still a lot milder than New York was at this same time of year. Bea would be wading through slush and probably snow just to catch her train into Manhattan from Brooklyn, if she was in her city. Didn't mean she had become overly attached to island life and the non-existent winter. If anything, the only thing keeping her from climbing the walls was the fact that she and Lydia were still trying to find where the cannibals had set up their camp. So far they had been pretty elusive, but rumors were always floating around about where they might be. She doubted that any of them were based in fact, most of them were probably just stories. But fact or not, she still found herself almost to Haven, near the caves following up on word that someone had seen people living in the caves on the edge of the island. Granted the source had been a couple of dudebros who'd looked more wild eyed and wasted than anyone had a right to look at 7:30am. But It was still enough for her to head out that way, just for a look. She had even asked around and managed to pick up a couple people to go with her, just for the numbers. Also under the guise of some patrol/nature excursion. It was a pretty thin excuse, even she knew that. The caves themselves were a bust. Empty except for some debris the tide had washed in. Cold and dank, like Bea expected and a hell of a lot smaller than she had anticipated. If it had been heights she would've been fine, but small spaces made her twitchy. She was just about to call it and exit when there was a loud crack from the way they had come, then the sound of rock being displaced. Her spine went cold, because there wasn't a straight way back to the water from where she was. Heaving a deep sigh, mostly to calm herself, she edged back to where the noise had come from. Really only about five feet from where she'd been, and clenched both her fists in an effort to keep her growing fear at bay. The rocks hadn't caved her in completely, but the hole at the top of the pile wasn't large enough to get back through. "Fuck," Bea snarled and pushed her hand against the rocks. "Anyone out there? The damn cave wedged me in." She wouldn't admit to herself that her voice quivered. |
