What they managed to get from the group distributing the holiday supplies was, admittedly, not a lot. The size of their family wasn’t convincing enough to get them any more than anybody else. But it was enough. At least they had something to decorate with, even if the season sure as hell wouldn’t be very merry this year. Lydia couldn’t honestly say she’d thought much at all about Christmas. Holidays held little importance when one was out fighting for his or her life. The younger girls and her sisters wanted to do something, though. Lydia wasn’t in the mood for any of it, but she wasn’t going to ruin the mood for the others. Especially her now thirteen-year-old. She lay on her stomach near the head of Hadley’s bed, propping herself up with one of the pillows, and watched the group sort through their decorations. String lights in knots. Shimmery tinsel garland scattering bits across a carpet that was arguably more dirty than clean. Glitter covered everything. Snowflakes, which might have been out of place given the climate they were in, but she didn’t know enough about Kamong’s year-round climate to know whether it snowed or not. Ana bounded over with millions of tiny specks of gold glitter on her palms and tried to smear them on Lydia, who quickly fended off the girl’s attack and pointed her back towards her cousin. Glitter. One of the worst things ever created, besides Styrofoam packing peanuts. She yawned and stretched, turning her head towards the person nearest her. “Think those lights are even gonna work? If everybody gets to using them, we might just blow out a generator again.” That was chief among her worries. Not having a good time, but making sure they used power sparingly. It wasn’t wrong to be so practical, was it? Someone had to be. |
