Compared to the Half Moon, Haven was two, maybe three times as treacherous. There were fewer living people, yet the trade-off of having more dead neighbors wasn’t exactly a prize. Today marked six months since Kendall had set foot in the city. She’d made jokes that the place hadn’t changed much; that it was the same shithole it had always been. Only difference now was, she was actually considering relocating, getting away from the cramped quarters the hotel had become. The group they’d come here with had splintered off, a handful wanting to check out the apartment complex a few blocks over. Another few had been drawn to the planked bridges that connected the roofs. Kendall had gone with the third group to the warehouse. A building like that no doubt had an endless amount of space. Chris and Judah weren’t the worst company she could get stuck with. One was ex-military; if they got into a scrape, they had someone to take charge and get them out. As for the French guy, she didn’t know what his motive was for being here. She didn’t think he’d be able to handle it if bad shit went down. At least he wasn’t an ass. Inside the warehouse was dark. Very little light could seep through the boarded up windows. Heavy objects were pushed up against the other entrances. “Explains why we couldn’t get in any other way,” she remarked, lifting her flashlight to head level to more easily shine it into the vast room’s dark corners. “Whoever was staying here had plenty of heavy shit to keep the zombies out.” Rows of empty shelves hindered her view of the entire area. She craned her neck and looked around. A few bodies were slumped on the floor, unmoving. “Heads up. We’ve got bodies.” It was eery how her voice carried through the warehouse. Glancing at the ceiling, she listened for any sound of footsteps from the second level. Some of the rafters were missing or dangling precariously, ready to bean someone in the head at any given moment. “Ceiling looks weak, too.” |
