WHO: Judah and Lydia
WHEN: [forward-dated] July 4th, 2014; night-ish
WHERE: The beach
WHAT: Running into each other at the bonfire.
Celebrating Independence Day was something that Judah wasn’t going to neglect to do. It was just a thing with him; they had always celebrated while he was active military, and he usually made it to someones 4th of July bash once he was out of active duty. Sure, most of his previous celebrating hadn’t involved patrolling for zombies and making sure no one wandered off and got eaten, but it still felt right to make the effort to throw a nod towards the holiday, and he made his own silent wishes for safety for the men and women still in active war zones. Ones that didn’t involve the undead. It was almost nostalgic, that undercurrent of a danger he hadn’t felt on the holiday since his last tour. Something not too many others would probably understand.
Whoever scouted out the part of the beach the bonfire was built on had done good too. It was a nice chunk of sand, and easy enough to defend against any unwanted guests. Judah had only had to dispatch a couple of them on his last patrol around a couple hours ago. Someone else was doing that now, and he was just going to let them, since he’d hit about the time he just wanted to chill, maybe drink a little and see if he could make it to sunrise without falling asleep.
Ryder and his friends were around somewhere, Judah kept spotting them in the group of people every so often. Maybe if they’d had more booze on hand he would have seriously considered trying to get Ryder into some sort of a drinking game, but the alcohol they did have on the beach was being watched pretty carefully. And their were kids around, even he knew that probably wasn’t going to fly with the parents; he wouldn’t want Eli making himself a spectator.
Chairs had also been hauled down near the bonfire. Most of them were occupied, but there were still a couple open, and he scanned the options before settling on one off towards the left of the fire. Laughing under his breath when he spotted Elijah about ten feet to his right talking to a familiar face. It would figure that his son found Mari Stone eventually; Judah hadn’t said anything to him about the Stones’ being on the island too, he’d been waiting to see what kind of reaction he’d get if Eli found out on his own. The kid looked pretty damn happy to have found her though, kind of that stupidly exuberant pre-teen excitement that was so entertaining to watch.
When Elijah looked his way, Judah hollered, “I’m watching you,” over the noise of the party and made the universal hand gesture that usually went along with the statement, laughing under his breath when it earned him an eye roll. “Hey Mari, keep him outta trouble,” he added, amused when all he saw was the whites of Eli’s eyes for a second time. He’d been hoping for a put upon statement of ‘Dad’ also, but he’d take the eye rolls. Probably other parents didn’t actually encourage that kind of a behavior, but Judah wasn’t other parents.
“I’m serious, keep him from getting himself eaten.”
